Ambient background light Add-on

Hi,
I am looking to utilize a LED TV as part of a light box setup, I currently have
a XBMC hooked up, which I love. I am trying to find a add-on.
that will do nothing else then showing a plain white background image fading
to black via the use of the + / - buttons so that it could function as the dim-able
light source behind my translucent image.
Does any such thing exist ? Would anybody help me coding this ?
I have no idea how.

Any help or pointer would be greatly appreciated

Are you using boblight? Are you on linux?
If yes compile this version with chase daemon:

Nice project! I'm really proud to have inspired something like this!
My own project have been on ice for a while but lately I finally got the time to solder a prototype, however it's not quite finished yet.
