Yep, the log is a nice tool.
However, the coloured (standard) buttons is just named the colour as "red" and so on.

I plugged in my old StreamZap remote that I had laying around. Not every button did what I needed it to but it worked well enough to use it.

For anyone else having trouble getting their pi to work with their tv remote, check your hdmi cable! I was using a cheap cable. Soon as I swapped to a decent cable it worked straight away!!
