Solved XMBC 11 & 12 Crashes Upon Opening Video w/ 5.1 audio
#1
First, I gotta say that this is an awesome program & community. I only just installed XBMC and despite the fact I'm having issues, it seems like an amazing piece of software.

However, I'm having a problem. XBMC will crash to windows whenever I load a video. There are a few that seem to load, but then don't play properly, but first things first:

http://pastebin.com/jZUUjjiK

That is the log from when I try to open an mkv video file. The problem seems to be audio related, but I'm not sure how to fix it. I tried changing my audio settings from Analog to Optical/SPDIF but that doesn't change anything.

An update:

I've tried systematically going through each of the "Audio Output Device" options, all 6 of them. The result is either:

- a crash to desktop
- audio for about 10 seconds, but no video
- I get no audio or video at all

I did this test under optical/Coax as my audio output option. I also tried many of these options under HDMI and Analog, but not as systematically.

The verdict is that no changing of these settings will get video or audio to play.

I'm out of ideas here. I don't exactly have a weird audio card or anything. It's RealTek...

Here is another log after trying some different options. The log shows some slightly different stuff.

Would anyone recommend trying version 12 to solve this problem? Or is it going to come with its own issues?

I'm at a point where I can't use XBMC at all right now..

Since there won't be anything fixed for Eden it doesn't hurt to try Frodo. It contains many fixes/improvements.

Ok, so I tried version 12 and got pretty well the same results:

http://pastebin.com/baiEYUiz

It would either crash right away, or I get no video and stuttering sound. This goes on for a few seconds until the CPU is so overloaded that it almost becomes unresponsive. FPS drops to 6.

I tried another video file this time. It was an XVID w/ MP3 2.0 audio encoding. It seems to play okay.

So the issue is either with AAC / DTS / Dolby type stuff, 5.1+. OR it is the MKV file type, x264 or whatever.

Could this be my video codecs? VLC plays everything perfectly...

try switching to DirectSound

Hi there. XBMC doesn't use external codecs per se, so that's unlikely to be your issue. FFmpeg - the library that decodes the files, doesn't seem to like that Boardwalk Empire file - throws up tons of errors. How are other files using passthrough audio (Dolby, DTS, etc)?
System: XBMC HTPC with HDMI WASAPI & AudioEngine - Denon  AVR-3808CI  - Denon DVD-5900 Universal Player  - Denon DCM-27 CD-Changer
- Sony BDP-S580 Blu-Ray  - X-Box 360  - Android tablet wireless remote - 7.1 Streem/Axiom/Velodyne Surround System
If I have been able to help feel free to add to my reputation +/- below - thanks!

Hey WiSo, I've systematically tried all device outputs.

Hey DDDamina, I appreciate the attention. However, I'm not sure I understand your question.

Edit:

Here is a log where I played an episode of The Simpsons successfully. It is 2.0 audio. Then I tried playing a boardwalk episode again and it crashed to the desktop.

At first I had trouble getting audio w/ the simpsons ep until I changed some settings for my audio device. So I think I've got the right device set now...

Tried some other options, uninstalled XBMC 11 and only have 12 installed now.

I tried playing with Windows' settings for my audio device.

the log looks a bit different this time:

http://pastebin.com/kUrH2ajZ

And here is another log from a crash while playing a different file, but also an x264:

http://pastebin.com/nZTG1wZg

And another crash from a different video file:

http://pastebin.com/gZL7bQ35

I'm going nuts here!!! This is some pretty basic functionality I'm looking for - simply the ability to play video files!!

@NiceSocks - can you give me some details on your audio hardware as well as your settings in the audio properties? You may want to refer to this guide for WASAPI setup, but DirectSound should work for most formats.

Also please check for any updates to your audio device drivers - RealTek have proven to be a RealPain Wink

Hey DDDamian,

My audio hardware is an on-board Realtek. Motherboard is Intel DH67BL. I'm using digital optical line out to my receiver, which accepts DTS and Dolby.

I updated my audio driver with one from Intel's website. It did not help. Prior to updating the driver said it was a Realtek driver, and it came with Realteks software. The update removed that software and now it just says High Definition Audio Device. However, my audio hasn't changed any since updating.

I have already gone through the guide you mention and haven't found any solutions. I also tried this guide here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=146911

In the Windows Audio Properties I have gone through all the settings. Iève checked each output with the test buttons to make sure the options I have selected (DTS Etc.) actually work. And I have checked Allow applications to take exclusive control as advised by jjd-uk.

Hm - kinda stumped on this one. The logs show two optical device drivers - can you disable the one you're not using - perhaps in the BIOS?

I don't have any virtual drive software installed on that PC either.
