Galaxy Tab S, Kit Kat, xbmc 14.0.A3 and its still there.
Workaround to set 'touch key light duration' to 'always off' under settings/device/display.
Thought it will turn backlight completely off...

So these past weeks since Christmas I had been playing around with CM11 on my Samsung phone. After working with some xda devs, I finally got a stable build where everything works and I use it as a daily driver. Lo and behold, the buttons now turn off as they should. So I guess you need 4.4.4 or higher, not just 4.4. Either that or it is something in the Samsung rom. Either way, it is working great now. Just thought I'd give an update.
