BIG problems with RPi with OpenElec install
#1
I don't know where to start... I am trying to install OpenElec 2.95.5 on a raspberry Pi.

First boot:
- I got an IP, added a movie source from smb then tried to test a movie (720p h264) and it lagged like hell. I hope I can overclock and improved that. I'll see later.
- Even if I got an IP and can see my local shares, in system > system info > internet it says not connected.
- I can't ssh on the device. Found some help here but I can't access the folder Configfiles through the share, it wont let me. I access the userdata folder which is empty but not the Configfiles!?
- I try through the xbmc UI, in system > openElec os > services and I activate ssh which was not activated by default. Go back to home screen and come back to system > openElec os > services (just to make sure): the ssh is still deactivated!! The settings doesn't seems to be recorded on the card?!? Maybe after a reboot I tell my self, see next:
- the reboot button doesn't work. It appears to simply shutdown, so I unplug the usb power and plug it again.

From this point I never get any IP again and I realize that my movie source is gone. I try with my second RPi and it does the same thing no IP. I tried a different ethernet cable, I tried different power cables. Rebooted my router. Always same result no more IP.

I don't know if it is important but at boot when I see the openElec logo, it says twice
find: /storage/.xmbc/addons/*: no such file or directory

Latest news on my endeavor. I have tried another router with another cable on a different screen. I was able to obtain an IP 192.168.0.2, though that doesn't make sence since my lan is on 192.168.111.0. The DHCP is supposed to have provided the RPï an IP within that range. I plugged my computer on the same router and got a correct IP so it's not the router to make sure it is not the router config.

Anyway, so I decide to reboot the RPi, but after the shutdown/unplug usb cable/replug usb the RPi have no longer an IP! NOTHING , no stupid 192.168.0.x or 168.xxx.xxx.xxx, nothing.

I am really about to through that out of the window...

ANYONE CAN TELL ME HOW TO USE THE CONSOLE IN OPENELEC? I tried every conbination possible: ctrl-F1, ctrl-shift F1, ctrl-alt-F1, ctrl-shift-alt-F1, all those with F2, F3, F4

How can I troubleshoot thisHuh

As a network specialist, you have some network issues going on, proved by the lack of correct DHCP response then lagging LAN issues.

I have a 1Gb lan (however the RPI is 0.1Gb), i didn't have a problem at first boot. Without full topology of your LAN it will be impossible to diagnose.

However you dont need to do any SSH, mine worked out of the box (and my LAN isnt that great, theres alot of traffic), i dont get any lags though.
Many Thanks

OpenElec doesn't *have* a console. It has a startup script (/etc/init.d/93_xbmc) which starts XBMC, and either powers down, reboots, or just loops around when XBMC exits.

Does your DHCP server have a log? What does this say about the Pi coming on line? Or does your router have a list of connected machines, in which case it might list the Pi (although I doubt it, and I'm not sure what use it might be, even if listed. If it's listed with a *different* IP address, you could SSHing to that, which might allow progress).

Are you sure that your PC's getting it's address via DHCP? It's not got it set to a fixed value?

What I'd suggest is installing the standard Rasbian image first (http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads), and get that working. Once it does, that'll demonstrate you've got your network problems sorted out, and then you should be able to switch back to OpenElec without trouble.

openELEC wont be easy to resolve problems as its a "install / run" mainly, also worth noting in openELEC (and maybe others) that the DNS will look wrong (shows as localhost (127.0.0.1)) this is by design as it looks back at itself, "itself" uses the DNS given by the DHCP router.

I listed a reservation for the MAC address i wanted each machine to have, way easier then setting each one up.
Many Thanks
