As I understand it from this the open source radeon drivers now support VDPAU and is supported for the R300, but it seems very choppy. I don't know how to test if VDPAU is working or if XBMC supports R300 and VDPAU together. When I pull up TOP while a movie is playing, it is using a ton of both of my cores (dual core).

I don't think any Radeon cards support VDPAU, at least not anywhere near reliably. Have you tried VAAPI instead?

old radeon cards(<=3xxx) don't have the UVD engine needed for hardware video decoding.

I figured out that they only support mpeg1 and mpeg 2.
