Maybe raising the volume in alsamixer?

Switch to XBMCbuntu, open a terminal and enter

Code:
alsamixer

press F5 to see all devices, maybe press F6 to switch sound cards and look for some volume bars that are looking low and raise them via the "arrow up" button

If this doesn't work you need to post some more information. How is the XBMC plugged to. To an Amp or an TV. If it ist plugged to an amp...how is it plugged (HDMI, S/PFIF, TosLink).

A screenshot of alsamixer would be nice

Hope it helps a bit

Cheers

Turn the volume up to max in XBMC as well. For movies with AC3/DTS the volume can't be changed from your computer, if it's too low you have to raise the volume on your speaker system.

And no, you will not get audio over HDMI if your graphics card has DVI outputs only.
