Switching from windows to Linux
#1
Hi!

I'm presently using XBMC "Frodo" RC2 on a win7 machine, but I'm thinking of moving to Linux.
I found a tutorial/Howto (Here) that looks great and is made for AMD GPU users.

I want to know if I'll be missing any feature going from Win7 to Linux, like HD sound bitstreaming or if there are any pitfall that I should watch for. Are the same plugins available under Linux?

My HTPC is a Dell XPS 8500SE, with an AMD HD7870 video card. All storage is local (USB3 & USB2 external enclosure). I also use a Rosewill MCE remote (which should be fine according to the howto I found).

AFAIK HD bitstreaming doesn't work with AMD GPUs on Linux (because AMD drivers suck).

Ah, I see...

Oh I see... Does it work with NVidia? I can buy a cheap but recent NVidia card to replace the HD7870 since I don't game on this PC beside some emulators.

Depends on the Nvidia card. Not every card can handle HD.

See which ones http://www.missingremote.com/guide/bitst...-your-htpc

Its not a up-to-date post but you get the idea.

You still need a recent XBMC build with AudioEngine like the Frodo builds.

The GT520/610 is a good choice (the 610 is just a rebranded 520).

There was a very good post on the mythtv-users list recently about the curent nvidia models:

Worth a read.
