OK it works, but less good then in Eden.
In Eden you need to stop the movie and start it again in order to get the new plugged-in/powerd-on default audio device to work.
With your solution you need to restart XBMC. I can live with that, it is a lot better then without default output.

mhh xbmc.log please. It should be picked up on video restart too here.

If I remember correctly in Eden the menu sounds worked immediately on the other output.

does it work when going to the audio settings dialog for a sec (don't change anything there) after plugging it in?

I need a better error description tbh. I don't have a audio device to be attached during runtime. In your log file it always returned the same device as default device. There is no sign that you plugged in anything there?

No it only works when going in the dialog and switch to other then Default and then back to Default.
