Please add a Jabber ID field to profile Additional Contact Information. This field should accept more than the base JID: [email protected] , which would include the XMPP resource : [email protected]/re.so_ur-ce

Unlike many other messaging networks, Jabber allows you to use the same account and log in from multiple devices at the same time. For example, you might have a client at home, one at work, and one on your mobile phone. Any of them can be connected at once. The resource is used to identify each of these individual clients for message delivery. Just make sure to set each one differently (or let the server assign a resource to you).

When other people look at "you" in their rosters, they usually see a list of resources you are available through. They could send a message to your particular resource, using these JIDs: you@Jabber.org/Home or you@Jabber.org/Work. You could even log in twice at the same computer through different Jabber clients and chat between different incarnations of yourself!

But when Romeo sends a message to Juliet using her usual JID [email protected], how she will actually receive a message - through [email protected]/balcony or through [email protected]/bedroom?

User can set different priorities for his/her resources. A priority of resource shows user's availability through this resource. When you are at home, you have "Available" status in your home Jabber client and high priority for it. When you are at work, your home Jabber client probably have status "Extended away" and low priority, while your work client is "Available". So all messages for you are coming to your work client.
