You can't have an aspect ratio without pixels to fill the space. And those pixels make up the resolution. You can't not have a default resolution.

First the people who still use a 720P display must be quite limited now! And even if a few still do they can still use a 1080P skin. The advantage is that you get more resolution for text and so on, so it gets more clear! Nice to have it smaller also to leave more room for fanart, thumbs and stuff. Also it's easier to mod / code for when you use a 1920x1080 display which most do and are more familiar with, so don't have to recount for a 720P display. If you use 4k display that is a easy 4x also not a uneven thing that 720P is.

Then one more thing I don't know how it works, thumbs, fanart and so you can write higher resolution for, but when Kodi runs at 1080P and the source file is the same, does Kodi do some smart conversion so you get the same quality or not?
