ok, so i set the log level to 0 and logged the problem. note that i've removed the configuration part (were the shortcuts are created) to make the log shorter.

what i tried to do is simply go to an external smb stand-alone server drive, for which i've hard coded the ip address, and tried to run the file with the default player (mplayer). i then tried to run this file with the dvdplayer. in both cases the playback failed with no error message shown by xbmc at all.

note that i am running at 1080i (my hd tv does not support 720p, unfortunatelly).

also note that i am able to run this file using the dvdplayer when i access it from an smb drive on my windows xp machine, so xbmc knows how to play the file.

i've skimmed through the log and there seems to be some memory problem? but why would it only happen when i access the file from the stand-alone smb server?

please, any help would be appreciated.

so no one can tell from the log that i put here what is the problem when trying to see these video files? do you guys need some additional log or other debug info that i can give you?

do you have all of the appropriate codecs installed in the following folder?
xbmc\system\players\mplayer\codecs

try lowering the resolution to 576 (pal) and see if it'll play.

i think your running out of memmory.

if this works and your determined to run 1080i then start lowering the cache values.

if you start the xbmx hold x-y on the joystick (debug mode) you get a nice memmory available window in the top left.

i've found that running xbmc at 1080i is frought with problems 720p seems the best but ymmv.

i.e you get it working one build then fails again on the next, you really are running it on the edge of it's resources.

i tried with a lower resolution and it also crashed. i also tried fixing the resolution when playing a video to ntsc and it also crashed.

however, i tried opening this video from an smb share on my pc, instead of on a network storage that i am using, and it works. so it may be a samba issue...

well you are running out of memory... disable cache completely and try again.. 1080i takes way too much memory really..

Is there a way to set DVD player as the default player...I ask since i'm able to seek around ftp streams with DVD player....but i have to select play using..dvd player.

since i only know java and some c....is there anyone who is familar with the code who would be willing compile a onetime copy for me? i'm willing to pay / donate via paypal...

I hope i'm not being out of line with this request, its just this would save me from creating over 2000 .strm files and is thus well worth some $ via paypal or whatever. and i assume its a pretty simple request..

one other thing..i've tried replaceing system->player->mplayer with dvdplayer but the it still uses mplayer...even completly deleting mplayer, xbmc still usese it..how does it still use mplayer if i delete the player->mplayer folder

ive been looking at teh 11-02-06 addition to the cvs where someone made dvdplayer the default for .flv

except avi, not flv....the issue is i dont have everything set up to compile and i know ppl do their own compiles every day, i was hoping some one could do a compile with this one change...from what ive read it can take a while to get compling fully running, and i would rather not install any more dev tools like .net ect....i was willing to compensate someone for their time as well..

any takers? tks.. i would think there would be other people who would want this, as ftp streaming is the BEST across any medium (net, wifi ect..)..and with this force of dvd player you can get FULLY stable seeking and perfect playback....very nice!

dude it's seriously no big deal to to "get set up" for compiling. I just reinstalled Windows recently so I went from having nothing installed to making XBMC compiles with next to no effort.

I am using Microsoft Visual Studio Net Pro 2003 and Microsoft XBox XDK 5933 Unofficial, and all I did was run the installer for each. VS .NET does install some other prerequisites but they're included on the DVD so it's like "click click done". You need those two and SVN to get the source code of course. After installing those three apps and doing a code checkout, I ran Build.bat successfully the first time. You can do it, it's easy.

HI, I really appreciate the encourgement and it entised me to try...

but here is my point, i've now spent close to 20min trying to find MS .net studio and the XDK kit......maybe i'm stupid...whatever.....its like if some one needed me to do a small change to a graphic in Photoshop...and they dont have p shop or ever use it..or have a need beyond this..takes me like 30 seconds..takes them like 2 hours to find Photoshop..

i know the devs or busy or i would wait for them to implemnt this option normally...

let put it this way, I had compiling set up, I woudl do this for 50$..

how about 50$ to do this for me?
