My first mini-ITX unRAID server build - advice needed!

I suggest you read the following post from the jonnyGURU form: Single vs. Multiple +12V rails: The splitting of the +12V rail

JonnyGURU does a lot of testing of PSUs so I trust his info.

For that Seasonic PSU I linked earlier I think if you use all the SATA connectors (4) and then install 1:1 SATA adapters on the molex connectors (4) that you have nothing to worry about. That would allow you to power a total of 8 green drives. I would not be worried about this at all.

As I said before, you have to choose between maximum efficiency and maximum expandability. I think the Seasonic SS-300ET is just about the best balance you are going to find. It will be reasonably efficient yet still allow you to power up to 8 HDDs.

I agree.

Analysis paralysis - quite right!

Well you make a pair of strong arguments, and thank you for your patience. I think I'll get hold of that be quiet! 300W SFX PSU then - it's not too expensive and I like the idea that it will leave some extra breathing space inside my server (plus that Seasonic doesn't appear to be sold from that many places in the UK). In fact I might even buy two of them cos a build I did for my dad a few months ago in a Lian Li PC-Q07 feels for all intents and purposes like a power supply with a CD drive...

+1. I can't say enough nice things about the SS-300ET and SS-350ET. I wish our friends in the UK had better access to them.

Will try to take some as I go along, if I remember amidst all the excitement!

It'll be hard though to find a mini-ITX motherboard with a built in CPU and GPU with 6 x SATA3 for the price. The ASUS P8H77-I with a Intel G530 would be the next step up and then you'd definitely want the micro-ATX PSU since you'd have a CPU cooler to deal with.

I don't think I'll need transcoding (I'm still not 100% sure what it is or why I would need it over streaming). I've been getting by with XBMC running files off my Synology 1-bay for this long so as long as it's at least as powerful as that then I should be fine.

Might have purchased that motherboard too soon.

Just been looking at Plex Media Server - will I be able to transcode using that software with my setup?
