If I want to playback 3D from a file or bluray...do I need to purchase a separate graphics card? Or can I used the integrated graphics on an Ivy bridge processor and utilize the HDMI out on the mobo?

Cant find the answer anywhere.

If it is half-sbs 3d you will definitely be able to play it on pretty much anything. 3d Bluray won't work in Linux you will have to launch an external player in Windows. Google about a bit for the capabilities of your onboard graphics for your cpu. You WILL find the answer. If you can't find the answer anywhere you aren't looking hard enough (or at all really).

Well it's kinda hard to find something when you don't know what to look for.

Clearly I'm new to this

AMD A10-5700 or i3-3225 with their iGPU are OK for 3D from file or blueray.

No worries - I peronsally don't like the "search" post, but was trying to save you from some of the more elitist people about as you are new Smile

You just need to check out the capabilities of the onboard graphics - hd2000,3000 or 4000 for the iX processors. ANd it depends what kind of 3d and what OS you are using. XBMC can't use MVC but it may in the future - at which point a cpu or gpu with the ability to do this would be advantageous. For now, if you just want half-sbs, pretty much anything will do it that has graphics acceleration.

It is actually pretty hard to parse the marketing mumbo-jumbo to know if things like 3D or HD audio bitsteaming are supported. For Intel you can go here, find the processor are look for "Yes" next to 3D: http://ark.intel.com/ . Other places might mention HDMI 1.4a. Or, not mention it at all. Or, say 3D support but mean something completely different.

Based on user experience reported here and other places 3D support is included in these CPU:

AMD Llano A4 through A8
AMD Trinity A6-5400K and higher
Intel 2nd/3rd generation i3 or higher

So, for Ivy Bridge you need at least an i3.

Now, what kind of 3D might be harder to find.

Sorry for all the spelling mistakes in the last post - was frantically typing in the office.

Be aware that if you plan to use linix/openelec on the amd solutions then you won't get multichannel bitstreaming until AMD fix their drivers.
