Make me hip! (music videos)
#1
When I was a teenager, I used to watch "the" MTV all day long. Now it seems there are no real choices to watch music videos. Sure I can go to youtube and search and play for a video, but what I want is a music video station. Now that I am almost 50, I would like to see if that experience can be recreated. One that just keeps on playing, like what MTV used to be. I have XBMC installed (ubuntu, if it matters). What's the best way to go about this? Think something like pandora, but for music videos. Can it be done? Or do I have to download a bunch of videos and then create my own playlist. I don't really want that because I will have to maintain it. However, that will be ok if the solution involves something that automatically looks for and downloads the music for me.

Suggestions? What you you hip kids doing nowadays to watch lots of music videos? And why for god's sake isn't there a music video website like Pandora? Is there some crazy law that is preventing that from happening?

I would love something like this as well, and I'm not in my 50's.... yet.

I remember, WAY back when, music video stations played music, MTV and Much Music...

Listening in.

For now I plan to get some music videos and create a play list , or folder, and play them that way, whne I get some time to look into exactly how to do that.

If you have the actual files you can use Pseaudo TV to make a "channel" of just videos. I think a streaming plugin would be better suited however.

I was also thinking a streaming plugin would be best suited, but I had my doubts that such an animal existed. In fact, I think I would prefer a streaming plugin. That being said, one that requires me to download the videos wouldn't be bad at all if there was some clever way to keep the files updated with fresh material (rss or something).

Check out the VEVO music video plugin. You have to download the bluecop Add-on Repository to get it...I think it will be just what you're looking for.

Here is a link to the Add-on

Have you tried Muzu.tv

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=152879

This has over 70 playlists that update automatically, it also has charts, genres, jukebox, and any list of songs that it generates (eg by browsing or searching) can automatically be played as a playlist if you wish.

eg search for hip hop and you get a 150 item playlist, should last a few hours!

You can also build playlists on their website and then play them in XBMC

Looks to be promising.

It looks like vevo is the better choice for me. I guess I wasn't smart enough for muzu, because I kept an getting stuff like interviews with the artists, rather than music videos. I played around with vevo last night, and so far I am pretty impressed. I wonder if it will be possible to enter in a few artists that I like, and have it make a super playlist for me with the videos from those artists and some more artists like them. You know, pandora for music videos.

By the way, I also ran across the music video genome project, which seems pretty cool too.

Hi mr gribbage, have you thought about deluxe music, its just plays music, and has themed genremusic shows by the hour, you can get it from membranes repo:

This might be the fix for you?
Thanks

I've hacked up a very basic plugin to stream playlists from musicvideogenome.com here:

Not in any addon repositories as of yet.

+1 one this thread..
I don't know how many times I just wanted to turn on the box on a morning and have it shoot out music videos for me to listen in the background.
Will be back to see how the suggestions pan out.
