DSPlayer (DirectShow Player for XBMC) Frodo build available
#1
THE LATEST UPDATE: I (the topic creator) cannot monitor this topic and update the original post with new info anymore due to personal reasons (yes, life happens). However, the development of XBMC/Kodi DSPlayer still continues. Look for posts by aracnoz in this topic.

DSPlayer is a DirectShow based player for XBMC. DSPlayer support DXVA hardware acceleration (works in Windows XP, Vista and 7), as well as any custom directshow filters (ffdshow, ac3filter, haali media splitter ...).

The original DSplayer branch was abandoned by its initial developers - tieben20, blinkseb, 0wing - to whom we are grateful for their efforts, and currently the development has been taken over by a Russian developer known as Eduard K aka void, who has introduced a number of improvements and upgraded the code base to 12.x Frodo version.
Notable differences from official Windows builds:
- Native iMon VFD/LCD displays support.
- Extended audio streams and subtitle choice dialogs.

The latest build (based on 12.3) can be downloaded from here: http://yadi.sk/d/gc1slU8iFagBU

Note that in latest versions new menus for audio and subs selection were introduced. More details in this post.

Warning! In this build (20130226) a major change has been introduced: DSplayer's Video Database is now compatible with official XBMC builds (again). However this change may require a disruptive migration. Please read the Wiki article below about migrating your Video Database between different XBMC builds.
You can find more info in this post. I recommend to backup your MyVideosXX.db files from userdata/Database folder before trying any migration steps.
Previous version (2013-02-17) in case you'd want to revert things back:

To compile a Frodo build you need to check-out a respective Frodo branch. "Master" branch is merged with the base XBMC code from time to time, but this code is not tested and its correct work or any work at all is not guaranteed.

The topic on an unofficial Russian XBMC forum for DSplayer build where Eduard K. participates: http://xbmc.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=12 (Russian language)

Warnings:
- This is an unofficial XBMC build not from Team XBMC!
- This build comes with no warranties, explicit or implied, and you use it at your own risk.
- I (the topic creator) am not the developer of this build. All credits belong to Eduard K. He knows about this forum but has decided not to participate here. I don't know the reason, maybe he is not very fluent in English. Anyway, this is his choice. We are still grateful for his work. I will try to keep you posted about any updates in DSplayer branch development.

Known issues/limitations:
- DSplayer has limited network stream support (including streams from PVR TV-backends). However, playing some types of such streams is possible via LAVsplitier as source/splitter filter. For more information see this post: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1664201
- DSplayer does not support ass/ssa subtitles with complex effects (shadows, karaoke etc.), though it can display those subs with simple formatting (fonts, colors, position etc.).

It's just me, or Confluence skin in the latest build is buggy - the main menu items are displayed in English regardless of a language chosen? It's not exactly a dsplayer issue but still...

I've noticed that too. But only the main menu is in capital English.

Also the sound looping problem is gone because UI sounds don't play even if video is paused. I can live with that! ;-)

A stupid question perhaps, but I thought Frodo was final last week, but when I'm reading the initial posts it states this build is alpha..?

This isn't the official build. This is a custom build from Eduard K with DSPlayer-Support.
So THIS build is alpha, because this is just the second Frodo-DSPlayer-Release from Eduard.

Correct me if im wrong!

In fact, you're wrong. The version number was taken form official XBMC repo because code sync took place after the Frodo release, i.e. the version number reflects the current state of the original XBMC code.
However, Eduard is thinking of reverting the code base back to Frodo release branch and freezing base code updates for the time being due to potential issues in the WIP XBMC code. The issue with Confluence skin is one example.
Just to be clear - this concerns only code syncs with the base XBMC code. The work on dsplayer code will continue (hopefully).

@Roman_V_M: I'm currently running the Eden from last march because I wanted a stable release which I though this was the case when the final Frodo was ported to DSplayer, but that's not the case?
It's not a critisism I'm very grateful for the big work you guys have done, but I just want to be sure that the DSplayer version I install is stable.

So what problems should I expect if installing the latest in this thread?

I'd recommend to wait until Eduard makes roll-back of the code to Frodo branch, and then panni or me will release an installer. Hopefully, it will be soon. It does not mean the new release will be bug-free, but at least it will have as much bugs as the official Frodo (not taking into account dsplayer-specific issues).
As far as the build in the original post concerned, so far I have found the issue with Confluence skin mentioned above.
However, many of the DSplayer issues discussed in the old topic seem to have been fixed, so this build is a mixed blessing.
