If I have a dumb TV with good picture I can easily switch boxes for ~ 100$ without having to buy an entire new TV for 1000$, or if you turn it around, if your TV is getting old or to small, you just plug your external box to the new TV and are ready to go - no need to setup everything from scratch again. So this TV extenders/sticks are probably the best way to go.

While I am not a fan of apple, CNET did an article why an actual Apple tv would now make sense and it focused on this point. Some people keep their tv's for years since the technology is slow moving. Other systems like phones and set top boxes are replaced constantly with added functionality and new features. They add the idea of a plug in module and it would still cause issues as technology evolved. Set top boxes allow for one standard cord to provide the entire experience.
