Win How to start XBMC from remote control!
#1
Hi all,
I've just switched over (probably forever) to XBMC (from windows media center). I've added all audio/video content into XBMC library so as to play/pause/stop etc using my remote.
PFA picture of my remote and the marked windows media center key on it. I want to start/initiate XBMC with that key or any key using the remote. If i press that key the default media center oif windows opens up (which i don't want to use)
Please help!
Tia.

My remote:

Hello,

I haven't used a remote for a while now, so I don't know if this is the best option still. But what I did a few months ago is use EventGhost for Windows. It's real simple to setup, You could map the Power button to open and close XBMC.

Here is the forum with instructions and any help you may need using it please ask there.

Thanks all. Everything works great except that i have to manually start XBMC from the desktop. I guess all these tweaks are too much for me so i'll stick with starting it from the desktop icon instead Smile

Thanks again.

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add-on:MCERemote

this addon is available in the official repo

install it, it changes the registry settings so that the green button no longer starts mce (you have to start xbmc in administrator mode when you change the settings, it is a one time thing)

also in addon settings, you can select what keypress each button should do. Change the green button to whatever keypress you want, like Ctrl+Alt+G or whatever

Then right click on the xbmc shortcut on your desktop and put that key combo as the shortcut key

Voila, the green button will start xbmc

@ aptalca nice solution..

what i did was rename the MCE executable (so it wouldnt start with green key press) then i used eventghost to open xbmc upon green button press.. easy, as i was already using eventghost for some automation, so this was the simplest method for me.

I've disabled MCE in windows and trying to "right click on the xbmc shortcut on your desktop and put that key combo as the shortcut key"

I guess this is the setting? That green key i highlighted in my forst post is probably the "windows key". What do i do next?

That is correct. The windows key is the green button

Now right click on any xbmc shortcut/icon, possibly one on your windows desktop and select properties (I did it on the xbmc shortcut that I had pinned to the win 7 taskbar)

Click on the space next to the "shortcut key" and press ctrl-shift-w and click ok

You can test it to see if pressing ctrl-shift-w launches xbmc

If it does, so will the green button on the remote

EDIT--

Certain key combinations simply don't work, maybe because they are taken up by other software.

On my computer, ctrl-shift-w doesn't work, I think Firefox might be using it

Just try different combos by changing the shortcut key, applying and then trying it on the keyboard until you find one that works. For me, ctrl-alt-shift-T works

ctrl-shift-w opens xbmc on my pc but it is not launching it from the remote... checking. I've disabled MCE from : Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features

Does that make a difference?

I've downloaded a skin in rar format. I can't install it from xbmc. Is there a particular way of doing it?

Not all Remotes work the same. It looks like your remote doesn't function as it should (your IR receiver and remote needs to be Microsoft eHome compatible). Check out this old forum post for the info...
