Advice - XFX Radeon HD 6450 with Dell OptiPlex 755
#1
I have an old Dell Optplex 755 tower (it's a Core2Duo CPU), but it has no remote or HDMI video card. So I am considering this video card

XFX Radeon HD 6450 625M 1GB DDR3 HDMI DVI VGA PCI-E Video Card HD645XZQH2
< http://www.amazon.com/XFX-HD645XZQH2-Vid...606&sr=8-1>

And this MCE remote:

Windows 7 Vista XP Media Center MCE PC Remote Control and Infrared Receiver for Home, Premium and Ultimate Edition

I want to run Frodo, and have support for DTS-HD MA and TrueHD. My AVR is an Onkyo TX-NR509, which does support those 2 HD audio codecs. This card was recommended in the pinned "Your first HTPC" thread. My current HTPC is a Dell Inspiron 410, which works fine, but won't support HD audio (it has a Radeon 4200 GPU, which doesn't support HD audio, apparently). So I am thinking of use the Optiplex 755 instead.

Thoughts? Good choices, gotchas anywhere, etc.

You haven't said if you want to run XBMC under Windows or Linux.

AMD video cards only bitstream HD Audio under Windows. With Linux they are limited to 2.0PCM and DD/DTS lossy - due to Linux driver issues. Under Linux you need to use an nVidia solution for HD Audio (or a Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge Intel integrated solution - with a bit of tweaking) for bitstreaming HD Audio.

You're right, my mistake. Yes, it would be Windows. The machine currently has Vista on it, so I'd either use that, or buy a Win 7 Pro and upgrade the OS.

So this should work under Windows, for XBMC Frodo to play HD audio? If so, I would either get the XFX version, or possible the HIS equivalent. (I have a HIS Radeon HD 6850 in one of my other machines, and am pleased with it).
