Idea for CEC Replacement by IR LED
#1
Hey Guys,
I recently had to learn the sad truth about my Grundig 42 GLX 6052. Turns out, it does not support CEC.
So I started thinking...

All I wanted from CEC war to turn of the TV whenever XBMC goes to screensaver and turn it back on, when I become active again.

Although, since I have my HTPC placed in an MS-Tech MC-1200, I can put the HTPC to sleep by remote control and (because the Case has a special wiring from the always active purple ATX line to the IR PCB) even wake it up with that same control.

My Idea is to use an IR LED to send the Standby/Wake signal to the TV. All I needed would be an IR LED (maybe connect a microcontroller to the Serial port) and Put that LED right in front of the TV's receiver.
and a little Script would do the rest...

Anyone ever heard of that, maybe I don't need to do all the work by myself, if someone has done something like that before..
I am grateful for any suggestions you might have on that topic

I have such a setup for a toshiba tv without regzalink (cec). You could use the 20$ IR transceiver 'IR Toy' from http://dangerousprototypes.com/. The current firmware seems to have a small bug since I have to reconnect the device after a week of hibernating and restarting my htpc. There is a software in their forum to learn IR codes from your remote control and then play them back.

Can this be controlled by eventghost?

Nevermind it can...

Yes it can, but it doesn't work well with the dedicated eventghost plugin.
I start the commandline tool for playing a recorded IR sequence with different files as argument instead (in eventghost). The tool can be found here.

that sucks! I heavily use EG with my setup... I need to turn my tv on/off via IR but my IR blaster isn't accurate... I always end up transmitting some hidden IR command to the TV putting it into demo mode, etc....

You can use the USB-UIRT and it works great with eventghost.

You can build your own transmitter using just 2 LEDs and an audio cable. Its connected to the headphone jack. You must record an audio file first and then you can transmit the IR command by playing a WAV file. It really works :-)
