Manage Files Remotely Without Disturbing XBMC viewing
#1
I have been getting my HTPC setup and one thing that would be fantastic is if I could manage the files remotely (either from the road or at home) I have been using teamviewer to do most of my remoting in, but it would be ideal if I could remote into maintain and update my files without pop-ups and viewer interruption.

I am running XBMC v12 Frodo on Windows 8 pro with media center.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

This works really well for me. I have two user accounts on my HTPC, one set to automatically log in (using "control userpasswords2" or netplwiz method) and the other account to log in via RDP. Port forward port 3389 on your network and be able to manage your HTPC from anywhere.

I use logmein.com for that. It's not great at file management (and you have to pay the subscription fee to get file management), but when I just need to login and rename or delete a file, it works well for that. As an added advantage, you don't have to poke any holes in your firewall for it to work.

I've tried Synaman http://web.synametrics.com/synaman.htm

It works but with some limitations. Copy , Delete, Rename files can do without any problems. Move is not. Can't copy / move folders to diffrent drives though.

Instead of moving folders with single command ,I had to manually create folders , copy files and delete old copies. Overall it was ok and free for personal use.

If I really have to work with lot of files management, I'd still use remote desktop software (Logmein, Splashtop etc.) instead.

Ok, so its been several months and this has been the ideal setup... Thanks again for the great advice on the Win8 RDP patcher...
