OS X XBMC Crashes immediately on launch
#1
Hi all, I've been having troubles with Frodo crashing immediately on launch. I get one bounce out of the icon, then nothing. No indicator light under the icon either.

Mac mini, mountain lion 10.8.2, everything up to date.

I've tried the following:
Latest release Frodo (64bit)
Latest release Frodo (32bit)
Latest nightly (64bit)
Latest nightly (32bit)

All of these versions I have tried both installing over the top, as well as removing the Application Support/XBMC folder and letting it create a new folder. This is the only way I can get it to work at all - however after a few launches, those installations will fail to launch too.
I've tried running under a couple of different skins, reinstalled of course, just in case.

Here is the crash log for a failed launch (seems to indicate an audio problem?) http://www.xbmclogs.com/show.php?id=3851

And here is the log for a successful launch: http://www.xbmclogs.com/show.php?id=3852

Thanks for your help!

Check your default audio output in the macosx system app and in the audio-midi-setup (also check speark config there).

I have looked at that before, but I'm not entirely sure exactly what settings I should use...
I have my receiver connected using optical cable - what midi settings should I use?

I have noticed that sometimes randomly xbmc will output to the wrong device )ie TV connected via hdmi instead of the receiver via optical)

My experience: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=158782, and some others: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=159702. Try using Applications -> Utilities -> Audio-MIdi-Setup and setting the output to 2 channels. That seems to work universally if your problem is the Audio-Midi-Setup. See my referenced links for more info.

Thanks RipT,

I have been following that thread (haven't installed 12.1 yet), and this thread http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=138638&page=5 and have fiddled with Audio Midi and XBMC audio settings so many times I honestly can't remember what works and what doesn't. I'm pretty sure I do have it set to 2 channel, and it does seem to be a bit more stable now - it's possible I have another issue, because I do still get intermittent crashes on startup ... around 30-50% of the time Sad

Based on your log something is hogging the audio device so that xbmc can't open it.

Ah... The only other app I run is eyetv - I wouldn't be surprised if eyetv did that. But I'd be surprised if nobody else has come across this problem! Surely there's a lot of people using eyetv and xbmc on the same machine?

Why would this be a problem for frodo and not Eden? Because there's new audio framework in frodo?
It seems to be a lot more stable since switching midi to 2 channel, but not entirely. Have had some more crashes on launch since then, just not every time like before.

Thanks for your help Mephiz, I know you've been busy with 12.1

For me also Frodo crashed on launch and settings in audio-midi-setup was right but still crashed.
Solution was that i toggled between different settings and ended up with same as in the beginning and then Frodo worked.
Same when i upgraded to 12.1

Lappen71 your Problem might have been a coincident with a broken addon in our repo which lead to crashing xbmc when xbmc checked for addon updates - this issue was there the last couple of days and was fixed last night.
