PI is crashing, dont know what to do....
#1
Hi,

i have got a Raspberry PI here and have big problemes with it, i am using xbian Alpha5 Version on my PI.
I have a Movie Share over NFS (Windows Server) the PI can see the Share and i can add movies, and here is my problem.

When i add movies to the PI it starts to scan with the scrper.... while the scan is running my PI is suddenly restarting.... After the restart i start the scan again and it scans the nfs folder with no problems...
i repeated that several times (delet the folder form the db, and add it again).... Sometimes it happens and the PI is rebooting, sometimes it works!?!?!?
I have the same problem in the movie list... when i list my movies and scrool down the list sometimes the PI is crashing sometimes it is not...... and so on......
BUT now it comes.... it only happens with 1 special movie!!! Resident Evil: Retribution!! Always with this movie!? Dont know what is going on!?

I have overclocked my PI in Turbo Mode 1Ghz...... but i mad several benchmarks with NO problems and NO reboots or cashes....
I have also turned the debugging on to level 3 but i cannot see a error in the Log... everthing is ok in the log....

So hopefully somebody can help me with this....

Is there a way to avoid this reboot!? so i can see what error message the PI is generating??

I was having reboot issues but not with scraping mine was with watching anything over 1 hour or HD content. What fixed mine was turning on the swap space and upgrading my SD card to a 16gb class 10. Since I did this I have not ran into any problems.

check out this thread about turning on swap space, I know it talks about using on the 256mb board but it did help greatly on my 512mb one.

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...light=swap

look at the last page it tells you what command to run once you ssh in.

Anything suspicious in the directory with Resident Evil? Maybe a rar file with subs in?
Does removing just the video file Resident Evil avoid the problem?
If so, what does mediainfo report on file?

no, the directory only has one file... the movie.... here is the media info of the movie...

hmmmm something strange is going on Big Grin

I made the following test:

I removed the Folder from the DB with all the Movies.... after that i added the Folder again and made a scan of the Folder.... No Problems....
After that i browsed in the movie Database..... just in that moment when Resident Evil is comming up the PI is rebooting.... after that i REMOVED the File.....
So there was no Files in the Folder... made a reboot... after the reboot i browsed into the movie list when i klicked the movie Resident Evil reboot again!?!?
This has something to do with the Thumbnail... there was no movie in the Folder... so it can not be the movie!?

I also changed my SD Card to a Clas10 Card... same problem.....

Can you disable "Extract thumbnail and video information" from here:

Does it still crash?

Also, did you open this discussion at xbian.org? CurlyMoo might have some ideas, as well.

I found that I can't run xbian on my Pi reliably in either Turbo or High modes. I had to settle for "medium." I then manually tweaked the settings in the config.txt in /boot and bumped it up a little higher that Medium but not as far as High.

I was having reboot issues, much like you are. It's possible that you may just need to run the Pi more slowly. Are you able to replicate this issue when you reset the Pi to default (700MHz) speed?

ok, finaly i made it!!! (hope so) it was a overclocking error.... but not so easy to figure out. First i overclocked the PI with this setting:

Code:
gpu_mem_256=128
gpu_mem_512=128
arm_freq=1000
core_freq=500
sdram_freq=500
over_voltage=6

I made some test with this seetings. benachmarks, PI calcuation etc.... every test was fine.... no problem.... So i thought the setting must be okay.....

But all the time i had this reboots......

So i looked closer at the overclocking settings and installe Quake3 for a test... and here it comes, i started quake and baaaammm reboot.....
With the settings above quake3 dont runs... but all the benachmarks had no problem with the settings......

Finaly i found a setting:

Quote:gpu_mem_256=128
gpu_mem_512=128
arm_freq=950
core_freq=450
sdram_freq=500
over_voltage=2

With this setting Quake is runnig and all the other benchmarks ar running too..... I tested also the Resident Evil Problem.... it did not happen again... so i hope the problem is fixed now.....

I had a PI vom RS Made in china.... there are lots of "oc" problems with this PI´s.... it has Hynix Chips on it.... the Chips from Farnell (Samsung) are better.... i ordert now 1 from Farnell to see it is true or not......
But for now, thx for the HELP!!!!

If you want to run with a high OC either use a USB hard drive for your storage partition or one of these: http://www.lexar.com/products/lexar-echo...up-drive-0 The 16gb and 32gb ones are nearly as fast as a USB HD (the 8gb's are a little slower) and you won't have to worry about corruption or system crashes.

Also probably worth enabling the current_limit_override setting to achieve a higher stable overclock, but this will void warranty etc.
