My suggestions of troubleshooting (AND TESTING) chronological;
1. Reformat SD card and try again
2. Check SD card for physical damage
3. Check SD card slot on Pi and connection between SD reader and card
4. Try another SD card
5. POWER SUPPLY! http://elinux.org/RPi_Hardware#Power_Supply_Problems
Regarding power supply;
Power supply problems can cause pretty much all kinds of weird behavior and historically it has been the biggest factor for pretty much ANY issues.
The best thing to do is to actually test it (with a volt meter), to eliminate this as the cause it´s the only proper way to do it.
You can also just test another power supply just to see if that works.
I know you are trying to use OpenElec (which is very good), but Diligaf at Raspbmc has explained this very thorough, read this:

In other words; If you don´t test it you cannot say that this is not the cause of your problems.
