Playback issues since 10.8.3 update on Mac Mini
#1
I generally don't update my Mac Mini, and everything was working just fine on 12.1 XBMC but a few days ago I decided to go through all of the system updates. Since I updated video will regularly freeze every 2-11 minutes (generally around minute 6) regardless of video/audio codec being played. Also, after about the 3rd or 4th freeze for each video XBMC will act like I've pressed the "Next" button and jump forward to the next episode/movie in the list. I haven't changed any settings or done anything else with the device since the update, but these issues are making it very difficult to actually use and enjoy XBMC. Are there known issues like this with provided fixes?

Only without fixes ... never change a running system.

When you say freeze, does it actually pause or is it moving forward very slowly. The reason I ask is that I was seeing the latter and I returned back to 12.0 which solved the issue. Also on 10.8.3

I wish I had known this before hand. I didn't think that an OS update would break anything like this, bummer. Does this mean that it's a known issue that is being worked on?

It actually freezes. Audio/Video do not continue, there is a good 5-10 second time span where absolutely nothing happens on XBMC (I've tried pressing pause/play, and back)... the entire system gets stuck and then just goes right back to normal without any issue. I've tried switching to 12.1 x86, then to 12.0 x64, then to 12.0 x86, and I have this same issue with all of them.

Throw up a log and details about your setup and see if one of the devs can sort it out. I am running 10.8.3 on macmini 2011 with 12.0 64bit as the most stable option for me.

Here's the log of what was happening just this morning.

System Information:

Post a new log. Enable Debugging in system->system. Don't cut the log - i need it complete. And please post it to pastebin.com and only put the link in here.

I had to split the log file in half for exceeding 500KB limit. I started XBMC fresh, browsed straight to "Gamer" again under movies, let it play for ~45 minutes. I had several freezes during that time, and 2-4 of the instances of it skipping forward to the next movie in the list, "Gangs of New York".

That file is either broken or you have serious network issues:

Also during playback it always fetches some epg scraper stuff. Looks like it updates the EPG database during playback (iirc you can switch this off in live-tv settings). Also i would suggest to turn off "automatically play next movie" in system->video->playback.

But basically ffmpeg chokes on this file because of corrupted data. You could try the 32bit/i386 version of xbmc and see if it works better.

Also you could play with "refreshrate adaption" or what it is called in system->video->playback which should set your display refreshrate to match the fps of the movie (this has bugs when using passthrough audio - but as it seems you are only using stereo which should be fine then).

Actions taken:
- Disabled all "Live TV" settings
- Downgraded to Frodo 12.0 x86
- Completely reset router and all networking equipment

Still seeing the issue. Used a different file/format/codec this time. xvid/mp3.

Log:

For the record, the Mac Mini is plugged directly in the router via gigabit lan. NAS is also connected in the same method. Latency shouldn't be an issue.

I'll give that a try. I will also try downgrading back to Eden and see if that helps any. If neither of those two help, I'll wipe the mac, and restore it back to 10.8.2. I'll report success/failure as I go. Thanks for all the help so far Memphiz

I tried this, and it did not help at all.

I downgraded to Eden, it also did not help.

I didn't wipe the HDD, but I downgraded back to 10.8.1, still having the same issue. I removed XBMC from the /Applications folder, and removed all data in ~/Library/Application Support/XBMC, and re-installed Eden. Still having terrible playback freezing every 2-12 minutes. I tried every combination I could think of in Settings > Video > Playback. Nothing has improved this at all. It's weird that this was working 100% without issue just a week or so ago. Here's another log, if it helps.

Assuming that the downgrades were not fresh installs, have you installed any new apps in the past two weeks ? and also have you already tried a power cycle of all the devices.
