Cubieboard vs Raspberry Pi
#1
Hi there,

I am currently on the look out for a small mini-pc to run XBMC off and connect to my mediaportal server.

I know loads of people have had success with the Raspberry Pi but I cannot ignore the fact that the new Cubieboard is so much more powerful than the Pi for not much more.

The only major drawback, of course, is the lack of support for the Cubieboard (and conversely, a lack of a dedicated version of XBMC in the form of Raspbmc) but I assume that this will change over time.

At the moment, I am thinking of getting the Cubieboard and installing Openelec on it.

Any advice on what to go for would be much appreciated.

Thanks

No descent hardware video decoding on Allwinner devices. So a Cubieboard would be a bad idea for XBMC.

See this thread for more info:

I own both a Mele A2000 (Allwinner A10) and a Raspberry PI and would suggest getting a PI.

Thanks for that Nu7s - guess I shall stick with the Pi.

Just out of interest, do you tend to find that the Raspberry Pi is powerful for all your media needs anyway?

Yes I do. With the latest builds of Openelec, Raspbmc and Xbian the Pi has played every file i've thrown at it.

The menu's aren't lightning fast, but since the Pi is so cheap and small this is not a problem for me.

Buying a Pi is never a bad investment in my eyes. If you don't like the way it works as a media player, you can turn it into a million other uses. I'm really looking forward to the camera board so I can use my second Pi as a IP-camera.

Or you use as a free co-located webserver;

hello, guys, have any body tried out this new pcDuino? I just ran out XBMC with it perfectly, it is much more powful than pi, and more unique than cubie, as it has arduino compatible headers, which means we can play arduino shields with a mini pc, lol...
BTW, pcDuino enjoys full support, I heard they just released the latest OS with arduino IDE, that is realy good news for all arduino users, i will definitely want it soon, so excitedLaugh

XBMC was already running on Allwinner A10 SoC's nothing special about that. The fact is VPU libraries are borked making perfect video decoding impossible. Apparently there are ways to load Android stuff which reminds me to my ndiswrapper days Wink But as was that, it is far from perfect.

So considering you have now 2 post, both hyping a product which has been discussed for months already: It is spam!
