Unfortunately I have already tried that and it just brings up an empty file. That's where my problem is.
Will give it another try. Maybe I did a couple of incorrect key strokes
Is there any way to navigate to the ect folder as ls just brings up 5 folders the xbmc ones.

Are you saying /etc/default/grub is an empty file?. It is not ect, it is /etc

Thanks for your responses all sorted now.
Proper pebcak error, I tried that command several times late last night and not noticing the f key was not working.
yes etc soz was on phone auto correct

Trying to install xbmcbuntu on the 847 celeron Intel NUC. When I push escape on startup I dont get the 2 options to choose from. Instead I get a massive wall of text and it loads into xbmc anyway and freezes. ANyone know why this is?

try left shift key on boot to get to the grub prompt.
