Hardware Set Top Box
#1
Hey Guys,

im new in this community. So I hope, this thread is in the correct categorie as i didnt found something via search.
Currently I'm looking for a simple Set-Top-Box running XBMC to replace my WD-TV-Live.

I'm a little bit confused about all the different vendors and compatibility with xbmc.
So I read about the hardware-acceleration - which isn't given on any hardware, is it?

Is the XBMC-Android-Version which can be installed from the Google-Market able to play 1080p content with hardware-acceleration?
In other words: can i use any android-box which can install apps out of the market to use xbmc or should i look for a 'special xbmc-box' like 'archos tv connect'?

What needs to be paid attention to?
Like I said I only would use the box for XBMC with 1080p and DTS/Dolby to replace my wdtv. A remote instead of a controller (like ouya) or a infrared interface to use it together with my harmony one would be great Smile

Thank you in advance!

a great deal relies on what you are willing to spend on it ..

In general i'd like to stay as cheap as possible.
But in lack of any boxes (i didnt find any matching my criteria) i'm happy about any suggestions Smile

Especially those 'hardware acceleration' and 'customized xbmc-version' thing confuse me Smile

As cheap as possible ? Hm did you have the raspberry pi in mind?

Its working farely well. But it is not as fast like a desktop machine. However the raspi only consumes 5W / h. Additionally you can run some server applications in the background.

As a remote i use a wireless mini keyboard:

Thanks for your reply.

Something between 80 - 160$ would be fine I think.
Hm, Raspberry.. I want something more 'out of the box'.

I've read about the archos tv connect or the ATV 1200.

I'm suprised that there seems to be no simple xbmc box.
I just want to buy the box, install xbmc (if not pre installed) and run it.

I also thought about the ouya which can install android apps out of the play store as well. But there's no remote.. just a game controller.
And I've no clue about wether the hardware acceleration is supported, or not.

I mean, I'm willing to spend money. I just need the suitable product! Smile
Cant be that difficult - I thought Sad

Check out OpenElec: http://www.openelec.tv/buy-systems
There are system with pre-installed XBMC or buy an appropriate hw and install OE yourself which is very simple.

I recently bought an raspberry via amazon including the remote, power supply, case, wifi usb stick and sd card for ~120 €. Wifi and keyboard works out of the box.

And the best is you have linux underneath.
all the best
Willhelm

ps you can also buy pre installed sd-cards (the raspberry boots from sd)

Based on my reading of these forums, different users have different results with 1080p streaming, so there is no consensus on any one box. I have been satisfied using the minix g4 for 720p streams. $60 from newegg or amazon.
Use a wireless mouse as the remote.

This might be something worth looking at. I can't vouch for it or anything but there have been threads here about it.

[Edit] I can't find it for sale anywhere. Maybe it comes direct from Germany. And, at $459, you could do much MUCH better DIY.
