Sorry for being a bit of a noob, but I'm trying to figure out how to do a factory restore on my 1gen apple tv. when I try to get to the diagnostic screen (holding menu and down) it just reboots back into xbmc.
Thanks for any help!

Restore is in settings. Holding menu/down reboots.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't see any option in the xbmc settings for restore.
the most current swiss army knife script does not have the function for 'factoryrestore' and I've found that since I'm running mountain lion to create the USB restore disk using the older swissarmyknife script won't work on a usb disk larger than 2gb....

I just meant you can restore an Apple TV from the Apple TV seTtings.

Then you have to reinstall the original ATV OS. Both
http://openelec.tv and
http://crystalbuntu.com will show you how.

Can anyone help me get openelec on ATV1? I've been trying the swissarmyknife USB for days and it won't boot. :(. Do I need hardware modification, or no?

Nope no hardware modification required all you should need to do is get that swissarmyknife USB built and boot to it and it will restore you to default, it takes a while since i needs to download the IOS from Apple but besides that it is straight forward.

Thanks for the prompt response. I've tried zeroing out 3 different USB sticks from Mac osx. Still just boots to Apple TV. The openelec image is on the USB but won't boot. Arg.

Hold down the menu key during boot (or maybe it was the down key). One of those should force it to look to USB first.

I finally made the USB stick with Ubuntu and it was a breeze, as advertised.
