AMD Kabini Boards

I can't say that I'm surprised by that. I've had more than enough MSI boards where something hardware wise was wrong, memory slots etc,. and I wonder why I still even bother to buy them when what I want is out of stock.

Well I've hit a bit of a hitch with my Gigabyte mobo and 5350 combo,
everything I tried in XBMC played fine until I tried a couple of uncompressed blurays (remuxed into mkv container),
When the video first plays audio is fine but video is a broken up mess, I've found if I jump forward 10 minutes then jump back straight away the movie will play just fine, also if I turn off dxva2 and rely on software decoding the files play fine (albeit the cpu can struggle with high bitrate scenes),
the same files play perfectly with mpc-hc without any of the above messing around.
I haven't had time yet to work on this issue to see if there's any way to cure it but in the meantime would welcome any suggestions to try when I get home later.

If you haven't try Gotham, you can try it. It have more options for hardware acceleration than Frodo. You can try several combination to see what work best with Kabini.....

I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

I have my fingers crossed that the ASRock board works with Kabini & XMBC. Seeing that the MSI motherboad failed and that this could be just an MSI issue has my hopes up again. Looking forward to your results. Will you be trying Openelec or XBMCbuntu as well as Windows?

Ok I've hit a bit of an impasse for the issue I posted about earlier, I've tried different drivers, the ones from Gigabytes website, the ones from AMD's auto detect and the latest beta, with all three the issue remained.
I also tried Gotham Beta 3 and rather worryingly that introduced tearing into the video playback whatever settings I changed.
My untrained brain is thinking that as even the beta driver was released almost a month before the hardware then we might have to wait for some newer ones before we get perfect XBMC playback whoever the vendor of your motherboard is.

Can anybody comment on whether or not the heatsink/fan would fit in a Morex 557 case? I did some searching online, and found:

-According to the Morex site, the height of the case is 62mm: http://www.morex.com.tw/products/product...?fd_id=151

-According to SPCR's review, the CPU cooler height of the Athlon 5350 is 39mm: http://www.silentpcreview.com/AMD_Athlon_5350

So if those numbers are correct, I'm guessing it should fit? And can I safely assume that a 60W PSU would be adequate?

It should fit. The Mini-Box M350 is the same height and it's being used in this review with an AMD AM1 ITX board.

Hey thanks for that link. It looks like the fan housing is touching the HD tray though... And it looks like the HD tray on the Morex is even bigger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RVsoPwS4S8#t=312

So maybe it wouldn't fit after all?

Edit: This guy fit the stock heatsink of a Pentium G620 in his Morex 557 (barely, again it touches the tray), but I don't know the dimensions of that HSF: http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.p...#p23246221

So I contacted Morex, and they said that it would be pushing tightly against the hard drive. Not only that, but since the CPU on the AM1 boards is closer to the middle (whereas the Intel socket seems closer to one side), the fan would be half-covered by the HD.

So I'll probably go with a Morex T3500 instead. More expensive, but it's 3cm taller (but about the same width/height), comes with a 150W power supply, and supports a slim ODD. So hopefully it'll be better for upgrading down the road.

The Morex 2766 also looks like an interesting option for those who want space for a PCI-E expansion card (via a riser), but it starts to approach the size of an mATX case (about 30x30cm, as opposed to about 20x24cm for the T3500). Might have been more interesting with a low profile PCI-E slot.

There's a little trick you can do with the Morex 557 to get a couple of extra mm. You can remove the SSD/HDD bracket and use the holes in the top of the case to screw in the SSD from underneath. You might be able to then get the SSD turned 90-degrees from the normal mounting and away from the CPU HSF. You can also get a 7mm SSD to save 2.5mm.

One other trick I've done that works well in small mini-ITX cases is to buy something like one of these laptop SSD/HDD caddies: http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Lenovo-Think...1022334821 and super-glue it under the lid. It comes with the screws to mount the SSD/HDD in it and you can position it wherever you want in the case to avoid the CPU HSF and it opens up some airflow by removing the case's bracket.

I also plan to buy that asrock AM1H board :-)
Anyone know, if ASROCK AM1H-ITX can simultaneously output audio through optical SPDIF and HDMI? Anyone tested?
