I am running Ubantu 12.04.2 LTS (no windows) on a sony laptop with intell i5 processor. I am new to all this but when I output to the HDTV, via an HDMI cable, the xbmc does not display on my tv but just on the laptop. I have the settings to launch from the TV and that works with all other programs. I would like to use xmbc through the TV display. Any help would be appreciated.

What are your current settings in "Settings -> System -> Video output -> Display Mode" ? Can you select "Screen #1" or "Screen #2" there?

Your laptop setup/video card isnt strong enough to support both displays at the same time. Common issue, hit the function key on your keyboard and the display button to turn off your monitor display. Should appear on your TV then.
