News is that Apple plans to sunset Apple File Sharing (AFP) and use SMB2 instead for file sharing. While it looks like AFP will still be supported for a while, its a safe bet that it will die not to many years from now.
Many of us recall switching from SMB to AFP with OS X 10.7 (Lion). For me at least it was a laborious process which involved messing around with edits in the SQL databases and in the end manually rebuilding most of my my library anyway.
I hope that in anticipation of this change, that eventually XBMC includes a way to globally change certain file sub-paths, for example AFP://Computer.local/Volume/ to SMB://Computer.local/Volume (and such). Such a substitution would apply to all media, thumbnails, and resources.
