Best TV box for running XBMC
#1
I am getting a 2nd box for my house and am helping a friend get into XBMC. He has it on his laptop but wants a dedicated box plugged to the tv.
I currently have the APple tv 2 and no real problems with it. I have looked at the Gbox midnight running linux, the Pivos XIOS running linux and several other boxes. had a chance to play around with an MK808 and a Pivos running linux. Disappointed in both big time. The mK808 was a royal pain the butt to get it to work and even then it never worked great. Glad i didnt keep it. The Pivos i had heard such great reviews on but the m3 model compared to my ATV2 just didnt run as well and was much slower.

I have heard great things about the ATV 1 running linux with the broadcom chip in it.

I dont want android just to many issues with that right now and i honestly dont think it runs well on a set top box anyway.

Ideas?

Thanks guys

If you have the budget for it and don't want the headache of other set top boxes...

Celeron NUC + 2 GB ram + USB drive + Openelec = ~$190

Will be far better than any of the options you mention above. It's also roughly what you spend on an Apple TV 2.

I don't get how the atv 2 will run so muh better then these other boxes when it's a slower processor and less memory

Because it is running iOS and millions of people own one (development and support).

ATV 1:

I sold 3 and replaced with 3 artic mc001 for what its worth, (which is an atom d525 and ati series video card. gigabit lan etc. They were 120 each after memory purchase. I sold the ATVs for around 140-175 each, equiped with CHD first gen cards.

Its just too damn slow with a library of any decent size and fanart. Can it play 1080P hd, well yeah, if it doesnt trip out on memory usage issues. If it buffered out it was just another issue altogether. I used openelec but also tryed ubuntu builds too. Over 2 years or so just wasnt doing it. I guess the good thing is if you want to try it, you can resell it and get your money back. I picked all of them up used on craigslist for around 30-40 each over a span of 2 years time.

Its a box from 2007, if you already have one and a crystal hd card maybe worth seeing what its about, but at this point, I would go with something with more than 256MB ram, isnt so dated cpu. etc.

Its great what was done with ATV1, but dont invest in it at this point is my opinion.

Ok I had not heard that. I will look into the intel box. Does it rub Linux or what?
I know a guy who uses his Mac mini fr a box since he has an iMac for a computer but seems an expensive way to go.
To bad there is no Linux for these new dual core boxes

Eh? Most people decrease costs by running Openelec (google it) on a USB flash drive.

That's what I do. Not a full OS, but gives you an XBMC appliance.

EDIT: Oh... you mean android. No help there.

Linux, Windows, OS X, whatever you want. It's an Intel laptop in a small box.

Someone said in another forum that there is no Linux for the dual core boxes like the Gbox GX2 and others. Only the midnight and pivos which run single core processors.

Why? the main reason for Windows 7 is the following:
PS3Blumote: Windows based software
Native Netflix using shortcut to windows media center with a press of a button netflix launches instantly. No hacks or anything else required.
Bluetooth keyboard drivers. Wake up on Lan etc.

Everything bar Netflix is possible in Linux, and I'm pretty sure that's possible by jumping through some hoops.

What's the benefit of using Linux? you have to work with drivers. If its a boot speed. Windows 7 loads in about 8 seconds from scratch.
In the end netflix starts with one single button and works flawlessly. I have another button to kill netflix which takes it back to xbmc? Seemless once its all configured.?
