Recommend me an XBMC hardware device

This is a Ubuntu problem rather than XBMC, I would expect Ubuntu desktop to fail as well...
The $ screen is the Linux equivalent of DOS, you should be able to enter whatever user/password you entered at the start of the install process.
One question, did you have a live internet enabled wired (NOT wireless) Ethernet connection to the PC when you were installing? All -buntu installs will use this to download drivers, and if its not enabled, then it may fail for the driver reasons you indicate.

Related question, what happens when you try the Try Xubuntu potion(i.e. run from CD rather than install on hard drive)?

would this be any good for the NUC, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KingSpec-8GB-S...2c66d4f920
will only be using Openelec?

Thank You

Personally I wouldn't bother with that because it's neither mSATA nor USB. It would need a SATA cable which in a NUC would be a step in the wrong direction. I've used DOMs ni the past in some of my builds, I've not found them to be much better than USB flash drives.

managed to install ubuntu. tried xbmc and it works.

But now I can't output to my tv via HDMI.

I'm going to give it a rest and come back to it when my headache's gone.

Thanks for your help.

Nearly thereSmile
I assume laptop is defaulting to internal screen.

1. You should be able to default to HDMI through Ubuntu display settings. (Dash-display?) Can't say for sure - I developed an instant dislike to the default Ubuntu desktopBig Grin)
2. If you know the laptop alternate monitor keypress, try that (Alt-F5 or something like that - every Pc brand is different...)
3. Try Bios settings, might be able to default to HDMI there.

Changed to monitor output on laptop - Maxed the screen and I'm in.

Thought I was there - and no sound via HDMI Wink

Must be the Radeon ATI 4200 settings. May take a bit of googling I suppose.

That one looks really good to me. Seeing as it's 8GB I'd like to know if 8GB or 16GB is recommended for OpenELEC? Is 8GB plenty?

Openelec uses almost nothing. So if you have less than 8 GB of fanart then you are probably ok. I would only recommend going more if you have literally thousands of movies.

And he literally means thousands and thousands. The 32gb mSATA crucial SSD i fitted is a waste. Doubt i've used more than a gig. As is the 60GB Samsung 830 SSD in my Revo.

But I didn't want USB flash nor shocking crap SSDs from eBay china.

But that 8GB is interesting. Might get one for a punt!

So I googled and googled and came upon several fixes for the HDMI audio but none worked.

I've spent a week now, trying to get XBMC on a 3 year old laptop to no avail. Therefore I have decided that HTPC is not worth the time and effort.

I'll be ordering a Little Black Box or equivalent soon.

Nevermind.
