The big problem that I see in f10 is that it doesn't have the main buttons when watching movies, like play, pouse, foward, rewind, stop etc. It's not much intuitive for some people to do these commands using ok button and the arrows.

(2014-01-23, 20:49)cidus Wrote: Hey guys, great thread.

I have a Mele F10 (http://dx.com/p/mele-f10-fly-mouse-3-in-...uFgKJBTtNA) which is a RF remote/airmouse/keyboard.

The keyboard and mouse work as expected. The remote part is mapped to some keyboard keys which is nice, but not all of them. Some seem to send IR commands instead of RF. I'm getting a FLIRC and will try to map them.
The OK button on the remote part is mapped to Left mouse Click, and the Exit key mapped to the Right Mouse Click.
For these to work as expected you have to change the xbmc keymaps. There is a good thread about this remote in the openelec forums (http://openelec.tv/forum/103-infared-rem...e?start=15).

The wife, however, does not approve of the F10, and I'm looking for alternatives.
I'm getting a FLIRC and will try mapping my TV's media buttons.

I love the button set on this G.Star JX-8059, however I can't find any for sale.

I have the opposite experience, even though the last 2 remotes I had (now the PS3 bluetooth and before the nyxboard) those extra buttons, the wife automatically went for the ok button and the interface. Not sure if the Quartz theme had anything to do with it.

As it is, I'm now looking into the Tomtom bluetooth remotes, as they pair as regular keyboards so I should be able to map them. For me, it has just enough buttons (with none spare)

Just received this VMX3 remote:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-ship...99662.html

I see it is available on DX too.

I will make a fast review.

I is better than I expected. It has a RF keyboard, mouse and remote (positive and very important)! Airmouse can be turned off pressing a button, but some other buttons active this automaticaly (negative). The remote can be turned in IR by pressing "TV" button (positive), so you can have a remote which you can choose if it is IR or RF. Buttons worked fastly in RF when connected to my rasp-pi running openelec. It has almost all buttons I expected in a remote, except the "stop" button (negative), I don't know why. I choose to change remote to IR and use learning function to make it work in XBMC, bcs of two things: it's boring when you press a button and airmouse is activated... it will not be fine for my wife. :-) Second point: the stop button. :-) I've learned stop on the IR remote as beeing another button. When I need to use airmouse or keyboard I change to RF function by pressing "TV" button again. Ok, maybe I prefer to disconnect the dongle and connect it again only if I need to use keyboard and mouse, which is not common.

In general, I think this remote is very nice.

I know I'm quoting my own post, but I've got this remote and it works just perfect for me. Had to finetune the buttons between the volume and up/down/left/right buttons, but it pretty much worked out of the box!

For completeness, here's the keyboard.xml I put in the userdata/keymaps folder.

Code:
<keymap>
  <global>
    <keyboard>
      <backspace>Mute</backspace>
      <escape>Back</escape>
      <equals>ContextMenu</equals>
    </keyboard>
  </global>
  <FullscreenVideo>
    <keyboard>
      <backspace>runscript(script.xbmc.subtitles)</backspace>
      <escape>Stop</escape>
      <equals>NextSubtitle</equals>
    </keyboard>
  </FullscreenVideo>
</keymap>

I saw this thread and just wanted to clarify a couple of points:

The URC (Universal Remote Control) RF20 is a great universal IR remote control. It can be programmed to learn IR commands from all your other remotes, so you'll need only one remote to control everything. It has a very high Wife Acceptance Factor.

No touchscreen. Only Hard buttons. Very easy to program. You don't even need a computer to program it or make changes. It supports Macros on the buttons adjacent to the LCD and the Power buttons, so when someone chooses the XBMC source, it can switch the TV to the correct source. I program mine so that when you hit the Off button, it changes back to the XBMC source (just in case someone changed it) and hits stop, and then shuts off the TV. When you press Power On, it turns on the TV, and switches to the screen that controls XBMC. If you select any other activity (i.e. Roku), it switches the source and goes to the Roku screen. That way, for people who just want to watch TV, it's always as simple as pressing On and Off. I learned the fast forward and rewind buttons so that they skip forward and skip back, and made two LCD buttons FF/RW since we almost never use them anyway. I also set-up a LCD button to skip forward 5x in order to easily skip commercials.

It really is the perfect remote.

Contrary to what someone said earlier, the URC RF20 is sold and marketed directly to consumers. URC even includes a DVD that shows you how to program it. At $55.00 it is a fantastic value. While it is an IR Remote, it also supports UHF. You just have to buy the MRF100, which will receive the UHF signals from the RF20 and generate IR commands from them. There's even a combo kit that includes the RF20 and the MRF100 for about $80.00.

All of these are consumer devices and ARE supported by URC. However, my experience (from a while ago) is that URC will support consumer purchases of their non-consumer remotes (i.e., the higher end models and not the ones I'm discussing here) if you ask them nicely and tell them that you are unable to get support from your seller.

If you don't have an IR receiver for your XBMC box, you can buy the Ortek Windows 7 MCE Remote, which comes with a full MCE remote and an IR receiver. I use the remote to train my URC RF20 and then throw it in a box. It costs about $14.00.

If you want a full keyboard in an IR Remote, you can buy the CE Compass IR Wireless Mini Palm Style Keyboard Mouse PC Remote Control for about $18.00.

I always avoid RF remotes for my XBMC because they cannot be learned and then integrated into a single remote. Also, the RF20 with the MRF100 essentially will convert any IR remote into a RF remote anyway...

There are quite a few other remotes you can go with as well. You can find more information about available remotes in the complete walk-through that I posted on the forums here:

finding a good remote is hard, especially trying to get one thats good for everyone ..what someone may want in one some one might not
iv tried about 10-15 remotes and have yet to find one that works ideally ..alot seem like there going to be good..then fall short.
over the course of searching iv found air mice remotes are not a good option for xbmc/pc use a track pad would be more accurate even better i fell is a track ball to me has more of a natural mouse feel
in a perfect world youd have media buttons on front rf, and keyboard on back rf both backlit ..but just never find it or get some of it not all
i also think price is a factor
best options iv found so far for a keybard/mouse/media remote was, keyboard side rf with trackball ,and media side has programmable ir and just used a cheap mce remote to copy commands from and use the ir
fast easy and cheap and can program all the buttons you need ,

i have few other remotes i want to test out and see how they are i also have one that i should be testing soon would just have keyboard and remote no mouse but all rf
looks promising but they always do

I am running the latest Openelec platform and the PS3 Blu Ray Media Bluetooth remote works like a charm. Whats more, it controls my Samsung Smart TV and my amp.

It controls the OE box as it would a PS3 through Bluetooth. The TV and Amp are controlled via the IR mode.

Awesomeness for $20. Just wish it had a nice keyboard as well but ..you just cant have everything can you?

Also a NYXBoard happy (until recently) user.

Regarding the broken tilt sensor (the cause of the above caveat) - it is a simple ball in pipe physical sensor, and not a gyro - something like this: http://www.adafruit.com/product/173. There actually 2 in there, possibly to make sure that the keyboard is turned on only when both sensors approve of the position, which might be a problem if one gets stuck in the closed position. I'm going to remove them and replace with a simple mercury switch (like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/171600334128) and I will let you know how it works.

In the mean time I'm also looking for a replacement, with these requirements:
1. Must have QWERTY keyboard.
2. Must have IR remote with learning feature.
3. Must have media buttons (RW, FF, play, stop) that work in RF mode (if they work in IR mode as well, its nice but not required - I need it to control a TV).
4. Must have multi use buttons that work for both IR and RF - at the minimum volume, d-pad, OK and cancel.
5. Must work on standard AA or AAA batteries - I tried a Rii with a rechargeable batteries and they run out way too fast.
6. If it has an air mouse, there must be a way to disable it completely - said Rii has this feature and it makes it impossible to hold the remote while watching TV as the mouse cursor keeps moving on the screen.

I've looked at the F10 and Rii i25 but both seem to have dedicated IR buttons (I'm still waiting for an Amazon custom response regarding the F10).

I'm now looking at this device: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...000F-00014
While not dual sided and not nearly as compact as the NYXBoard or other contenders, it does seem to offer all the bells and whistles, and I think I will be much happier with its track ball based mouse control than with an air mouse or the NYXBoard's barely usable d-pad mouse emulator. It is also available much cheaper from Amazon under several different brand names - look for Imonic, Andoer, Oboss, Chicho, Newskey, Acosun, Kingzer or Feilan (I'm pretty sure they use a random character generator for these names). There's a non-backlight version which also comes with a large sized USB dongle instead of a micro dongle, but it's cheaper.

Other remotes that were mentioned
* KR26 (the round thing): non-replaceable chargeable battery, no IR. It purports to solve the shaky air mouse problem, but I'm not going to try.
* Aerb (http://www.amazon.com/-/dp/B00K768DHY): Apparently only the four colored buttons at the bottom are programmable for IR, the rest are RF only. It could work in a pinch, as I mostly use just the power and AV source features of the TV, but as I understand while there is a button to deactivate the air mouse feature, it turns on automatically if you press any RF button on the remote side.

I've been searching for the holy grail of a usable 2.4ghz remote for XBMC for quite a while now.

Recently received one of these :-

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141538917703?...EBIDX%3AIT

Which seemed perfect until I discovered (along with many others) that the air mouse functionality cannot be permanently turned off, which renders it fairly useless for XBMC use (for me anyway).

So I've just ordered one of these :-

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-PC-Wirele...3a932509df

Not only is it very cheap, but it has trackpad like mouse capability instead of air mouse. This means you only use the mouse functionality when you actually need it - much better.

Will report back on what its like,

Woz

But butt ugly, looks like it was designed in the late 90s.
