WMC, Copy Once Flag & XBMC
#1
I've been researching moving to an HDHmeRun Prime w/CableCard from my provider (Time Warner).

Time Warner sets all digital channels (with the exception of HBO) with a "copy once" flag which makes even watching LiveTV and recordings impossible using software like NextPVR.

My understanding is that WMC, and even Xboxes running as extenders support this flag and "just work".

Does anyone know if XBMC, if used with WMC here, will work as an "extender" allowing the copy once flagged channels to work?

Thank you for any insight.

No, it won't. The only thing I know of that will play copy-once is wmc

There was once a project trying to reverse engineer and create-from-that a .NET WMC Extender application that could be run on a W7 PC

Also, as a note for sometimes quirky-drm . . .

-not all copy-once flags will be set by channel
-a channel that may normally be copy-free can set copy-once "per" broadcast or region

I've seen this happen to me, and if I recall it was either palladia and sci-fi. With Comcast, nearly everything stays copy-free, so it was surprising to me when it didn't work

Thanks all.

My Time Warner region (out of Central NY) has virtually everything copy-once all the time. The only things flaged free are the local affiliated (CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC) and a few PBS stations. Given that the FCC has now given the cable companies free reign to encrypt everything, it's probably only a matter of time before they flag those and force a digital tuner on everyone (no more QAM).

I'm currently using NextPVR, two Time Warner Digital Cable Boxes, and two HD-PVRs as the backend for XBMC. It just irks me that I can't pay 1/4 the cost for "renting" those boxes in exchange for a CableCard that would also let me DVR 3 streams.

I'm literally out in the middle of no where and only receive a single OTA station with the possibility of 2 or 3 if I put an antenna on the roof. Time Warner, in my area, is a monopoly. Sad
