Don't base you work on dead code. With dead code I mean SoftAE. You should rebase and do your tests with ActiveAE.

FWIW if I mix in a sine wave in the data sent to the audio output the sine wave is constant while the "real" audio is in this on again off again pattern, so either the sink is given bad data or there's some miscommunication between the layers.
