Linux XBMC 12.2 doesn't start at all using XBMC live and/or Xbmcbuntu
#1
Sad
I have been using XBMC4XBOX since many years. Recently, I decided to move to a more powerful hardware and selected a DELL OPTIPLEX 780 with 8GO o RAM and a Dell ATI Radeon HD 3450 256MB Low Profile graphics card (internal INTEL should be disabled by BIOS).

I downloaded XBMCbuntu (latest release : xbmcbuntu-12.2.Intel-AMD.iso) and successfully installed it.

Unfortunately, XBMC doesn't start at all and bring me back to the logon screen. I have been able to enter the desktop of Xbmcbuntu but was not able to start XBMC from it. I tried the live cd and got same "bad" result Confused

by the way, I am quite new to Linux. Wink Here is the log file I found... Any idea ?

Isn't that graphics card abandonware by ATI? Get nvidia.

it is, latest working driver is fglrx-legacy 12.6, but that is not compatible with the X-server in xbmcbuntu 12.2...

True Confused

What do you think about that : http://www.unixmen.com/ubuntu-12-10-and-...em-solved/

Could this work ? Tongue

imho it does not work, as I said above. Thats why the makson96 ppa downgrades xorg, but this ppa already holds fglrx-legacy 13.1, which (I think) has broken v-sync in xbmc. You can try that and downgrade fglrx to 12.6 manually in case it doesn't work,

Wow... Too much information for my humble and newly introduced to Linux brain Angel

I worked with Amiga, PC and MAC systems for many years but I am still very new to Linux. I selected XBMCbuntu because I really would like to get the same XBMC4XBOX feeling : "Turn on and enjoy" Smile

So... I just learnt that :

PPA = Personal Package Archives (kind of setup)
fglrx = ATI driver that supports Xorg

There is a kind of mismatch between ATI drivers and Xorg versions that makes my setup doesn't work, isn't it ?

Is this right ? Tongue

Yes, AMD just sucks with their drivers on linux . And your card is old enough that they have moreless abandoned support for it.

Confused Ok...

Is there an Ubuntu version that could handle with it or should I use the internal Intel GMA X4500 ?

I don't expect a lot... just being able to see 720P H264 videos (1080 ?)" In fact, the most important software I need is XBMC Blush I won't really use the Linux running in background...

some reading: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=116996
use ubuntu 12.04 (precise), manually install fglrx-legacy as described in http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1138272

There are still caveats: h264 [email protected] might be choppy or broken due to only 256MB video RAM.
