Does it work using the "Play disc" menu item or do you still use the index.bdmv file or favorite?

Curious, did you need a udev rule?

Install libaacs

sudo apt-get install libaacs

Then Google "vlc bluray" and follow the rest of the instructions there, remembering that you've already installed libaacs. This method will allow you to play older bd discs.

Last post of the thread I linked to above has a method that uses makemkv -it will play newer discs but is slightly more involved in setting up.

I believe it's libaacs-dev now.

I agree. The very old Blu-rays will work with the libaacs method.
The MakeMKV method is unfortunately the only one which allows to read the newer Blu-rays.
