That is a strange statement. In general ARM is far lesser than anything you'll find in a NUC.

The reason for my statement is that not to say they are one on the same, but to say that if they do not release an ARM client then the something like the nuc will be the bare minimum. Guess they could go VIA but that seems very unlikely. Of course I'm hoping for an ARM client for streaming and maybe a server version (Probably not going to happen) that could host multiple accounts like Nvidia's grid but less proprietary, one machine for everyone.

For those who were interested in this, the first 300 prototype steambox's are supposed to ship to beta testers on friday. They'll also be releasing SteamOS itself on that day for those who want to download it.

"SteamOS is based on Debian 7.1 Wheezy" interesting choice considering a) Steam for Linux was developed on Ubuntu, and b) Debian is more politically biased towards freedom software; no blobby firmware by default, etc..

Ya they said it allowed them to have more control over the OS unlike ubuntu. Im installing it on a VM going to see if i can get XBMC running. It has a desktop mode that can be enabled so will see what happens.

does the fact that "SteamOS id based on Debian 7.1 Wheezy" mean all that is needed is
Code:
apt-get install xbmc

For me, that is all I want from SteamOS for it to run my HTPC.

Going through SteamOS packages it doesn't appear to have xbmc. Is it just a matter of adding a repository? Or is that dreaming on my part?

Ya they have their own Repos setup for SteamOS, but on the FAQ they say that most debian packages should work so it should be as easy as adding the proper repo then go.

One problem I'm having with it in a VM is that the performance is horrid in Big Picture Mode (to be expected) but I can only run steam if I call it from the command line with "steam -steamos", it won't auto start sadly.

I need to get some hardware to test it

Now as long as game devs take this sign seriously (not like those speed limit signs for turnpike exits) and make more games compatible with Linux, then this is great news. But that is almost completely separate from getting a compatible XBMC build.

*EDIT*
I obviously didn't read the annoucement, or I would have noticed that it says it has built-in streaming from your gaming PC to the living room machine.

I'd much more expect Valve to move towards a more wide multimedia distribution platform distributing TV shows and movies (Or at least partnering with somebody who does) than I would expect to see XBMC ever in the steam store. They've already been selling other desktop software outside of games for some time now, so if theyre moving to your living room that seems like the obvious next step.

I'm sure they'll be plenty of distros coming out explicitly for XBMC and Steam to run alongside one another.

No because xbmc is not in debian repos.

They let us in one year, then the next year they said no due to internal libraries and lolpolitics regarding FFmpeg and LibAV(the group). Seems silly to me.

Thanks for the info, I had no idea it had been pulled from the repo.
