All those patches are in xbmc mainline. Just follow the howto, switch to Expert Settings and disable Mpeg-2, no need to compile manually (anymore).
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

But if all the patches are in mainline, can't we just use the official nightlies as well? Or am I missing something completely?

One is missing, which affects you if you run Mesa 10.1 rc2, which is the surface mapping and unmapping.
For stable mesa 10, you can also use mainline.

You do the drm-kms workaround wrong - you speficy HDMI-0 which is not what you are supposed to do :-)
And "this error" you show me is exact that problem. It did not find any monitors attached.

what about: HDMI-A-0 or better you directly look into /sys/class/drm to see how your output is named?
