Stuttering bluray HDaudio/video playback
#1
First here's system info:
System is a Sony Vaio VGN-AR730E Laptop
2.1 GHz T8100 Intel Core 2 Duo
Nvidia Geforce 8400M GT GPU
3 GB RAM
OS: Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS (x86-64bit)
Kernel: Linux 3.10.9-031009-generic
XBMC version: Frodo 12.2
GIT#: 12.2-32b1a5e
XBMC Debug Log

Managed to solve most of my major XBMC problems except BR playback.

When I attempt to play any of my Bluray Rips the video runs at like 4-5 frames per second and the audio seems to keep switching back and forth between the dts-hd ma track and the standard dts track accordingf to the display on my receiver(which is capable of dts-hd ma).

I've done many google and xbmc searches and tried many things, but to no avail. I recently tried putting Windows Vista with XBMC 12.0 on my second internal HD. That setup played all videos properly, except no dts-hd. Due to I think piss-poor Sony driver support, I had other issues with that setup though. So I have come back to Ubuntu. At least it works OK if I could just get it to play my blurays, even if can't use the hd audio track.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried to include as much info as I thought may be needed. I can add additional though if requested. THANKS!!!

Are you sure that GPU is capable of HD audio? I think it may be to old.

I had thought about that and tried to find out online but never found a conclusive answer.

All Nvidia reviews fir it claim HD video spport, including bluray playback, but never actually states HD audio as well.

Also, there is a HD audio driver download from my models webpage, however it is old and due to Sony's sorry a**es, I can't update it. I would assume though that since there is a HD audio driver at all means it must be capable, but I could be wrong.

Like I sais though, I'm willing to live without the HD if needed. I just want to be able to play the movies and have 5.1 sound, HD isn't mandatory, but would be nice.

Update: I just tried disabling DTS HD and True HD in XBMC settings.

Result was I got no video(just stayed on my movie library screen), however, audio seemed to play OK, although of course it was DTS only according to my receiver display.

Well, I was going to run the video again with the hd audio settings off so I could post another debug log, but both audio and video played fine. Only thing I did different was I just had it resume from where I stopped it for the first update. This last time I restarted the movie from the beginning. Maybe the first time it was still trying to use the original settings or something since I just had it start from where I stopped it. I don't know. Maybe the timings had gotten all out of sync and it was trying to restart playback using those variables or something.

So it's at least playing the video and audio now, albeit without the HD, which I can deal with if have to. Would be nice to know for sure if the reason I can't play back the hd audio though is really a hardware limitation or perhaps just a misconfiguration/setup issue.

Hopefully someone can decpher my debug log and get a clue from it. It looked to me like it couldn't find some lav files or something, which i could see that causing playback problems, lol. Perhaps wishful thinking on my part though!

I don't think that generation of nvidia card does HD Audio, but I agree that it is hard to find a definitive answer online.

It confuses me though that your debug log doesn't identify at all that you have an nvidia hdmi sound device. The relevant lines are 14-47. They are all Intel devices.

Also I note that vdpau is failing - this is the nvidia hardware acceleration - see line 912 and thereabouts.

Is this by chance one of those laptops with two video devices, and is supposed to automatically switch from one to the other? Can't recall the technical term. The output of lspci might be helpful Smile
If I have helped you or increased your knowledge, click the 'thumbs up' button to give thanks :) (People with less than 20 posts won't see the "thumbs up" button.)

You may be able to get HD audio by not bit streaming it - xbmc decodes the audio and sends it to the receiver via LPCM. I doubt youll be able to bitstream aa ion1=9300 GPU which can't bitstream.

Agreed

I don't believe the HDMI port comes off of the GPU like it does on a desktop GPU and perhaps other notebooks. The HD audio codec from Sony model page is "Sigmatel HD audio codec" and is listed under "Sound Drivers" along with the "Realtek ALC262 HD Audio driver"

Do I need to try and fix resolve that?

If you mean for example, a CPU with graphics engine such as an intel i series cpu has PLUS the Nvidia 8400M GT gpu, no, I don't believe the core 2 duo has built in graphics. No mention of it in BIOS either. Although BIOS is pretty limited. I was going to post a pdf of the lspci results but guess you can't attach files here. It's a fairly large file but I will try to post it using one of the "Code" options in next reply. Maybe it will help.

Here is resault of running "lspci -vvx"

I'm not sure what your trying to say with your last sentence. My CPU is not an Ion based CPU.

Your GPU is older/lower model than the ones in ions.

From what I just quickly searched and read about the Nvidia ION GPU's, it doesn't sound like they provide much of a boost to the audio side of things. Sounds like most of the advantages it provides are geared toward graphical enhancements. The audio is still handled by Intel HDA which has been around since 2004.

I think my audio issue is likely due to poor BIOS and/or driver misconfiguration from what I've read, but since I'm no expert, I could be wrong.

Here's a link to one interesting thread I found, although I don't understand a lot of it, lol.

In any case you really should resolve your VDPAU issue, your laptop will be running very hot otherwise.

Do you have any idea what the problem might be and how I could fix it? Because I have no clue. I'm a Windows man normally, so not very familiar with working in Linux.

I logged at your log and I'm not entirely sure but it could be that your GPU is simply too old to be useful (the log says something about not enough resources).

What rubbish you are talking about HDMI audio. An nvidia card with HDMI that delivers audio has its own audio device. You will get output like this in your log

I can't be bothered with reading your output. I asked for lspci not lspci -vvx

Not sure what "rubbish' you are referring to. I never said a card that has HDMI doesn't have it's own audio device. All I said was that being my system is a laptop and therefor doesn't have an actual card, just a chip on the board, perhaps Sony routed the HDMI seperate from the GPU. Even when I had Windows installed the HDMI didn't show as Nvidia HDMI, it was listed as either Sigmatel or Realtek HDMI in 'Playback Devices'. My desktop, which has a physical ATI card, comes up in Playback Devices as ATI HDMI, similar to how Nvidia HDMI is shown in the lspci you posted. Not saying I'm right or your wrong, as I have no idea, just trying to come up with a possible reason.

I'm sorry I didn't post exactly what you asked for. When I was searching fro how to get the lspci you asked for, the page I found said adding the vvx would provide nore detailed information, so I assumed would be even better. If that was wrong, again I am sorry. As I said earlier, I am new to dealing with Linux, so am just trying to figure it out as best I can.

Here is the result of running just lspci if you or anyone else are stilling willing to try and help me. Promise I will just try to provide only what is asked for from now on.

I still don't see any mention of my HDMI port. Perhaps the driver and or codec for it aren't installed. I don't see any mention of Realtek or Sigmatel which is what it was listed as under Windows.

Alsa doesn't show any portsas HDMI either. Lists two 'Digital', but that could mean it thinks they are both SPDIF and not one HDMI and one SPDIF, which ius what is actually present.
