How easy is it to get Ubuntu or Openelec to recognize my internet via a router-either wifi or direct connection.

Openelec ... anyway is easy also with Ubuntu.

Yes. OpenElec should just "see" most wired Ethernet connections for mainstream chipsets (which will have Linux drivers).
It will also work with a number of WiFi chipsets - and the OpenElec settings bit lets you select which WiFI network to use if that is the case. OpenElec recognises both Cabled Ethernet and WiFI on my Revo.
