XBMC won't display stream of live or recorded TV via any PVR
#1
My goal is to have my windows box record OTA via hauppage HVR-1250 via some backend and have running xbmc clients (frodo in each case) and have whole home dvr at multiple tv's. Seems easy enough based on what I have been reading but yet I am struggling to get anything to stream via my LAN. Here's what I have tried and they all ultimately fail.
ServerWMC with WMC on WIN7 (hardware more than sufficient.)
Mediaportal via PVR (not friendly to set up tuner)
NextPVR via PVR (frequently shows lost PVR connection)

I have had xbmc with PVR configured on 2 different laptops one running win 8.1 with sufficient hardware and one on an atom netbook with geexbox and openelec builds.

What the repeating problem is --- EPG will copy to client and you can select watch live TV or select recordings and XBMC client will display "working" and either nothing will happen following that or an error will pop mentioning program or show "cannot be displayed. consult logs" or equivalent message. After which I walk over to the serverWMC computer and serverWMC reports that it is streaming to the client as it should, but no show is playing on the frontend. (which is a different computer on the same LAN)

here are the links to logs and picture of what I mean by "working"

Any thoughts on what I am missing?

As far as serverwmc is concerned:
Wmc is using this folder as the main recorded tv folder: G:\Recorded TV\

The clients need to be able to access this folder over the network, but they are looking here for the recorded tv folder:
c:\users\public\recorded tv

So you need to set the correct network path to the recorded tv folder (see folder tab in serverwmc).

Krusty,
Thanks for pointing out the obvious! I knew it had to be something obvious I was missing. Since serverWMC had the path listed as From WMC I kept changing the settings in WMC, thinking serverWMC was looking at WMC for recording location. Once I changed WMC recording location, I looked elsewhere to solve.

Thanks a MILLION KRUSTY!!

For others who may not picked up on what you asked me to do that fixed this problem.
On the backend computer, I clicked the folder on the taskbar on Win7 or Win8 (Windows Explorer in older versions).
Clicked the name of my computer to view the network path to the folder that is being shared to the network. Right clicked and selected properties to look at Network path, and simply cut and pasted that info into the box in serverWMC on RECORD tab listed as Network path (THe only text box on this tab.

I have this same problem. However, changing the network path to the proper folder does not correct the issue. I can see all of the recordings on my wmc from the xbmc remote windows client. All the guide data is imported for tv listings. However, when I go to play anything, I just get "Working" for a few seconds and nothing plays on the screen. Note everything works fine on the xbmc serverwmc install.

Unfortunately you didn't post all of the server log, so I can't tell for sure what the problem is. Make sure you have shared the recorded tv folder and that your remote client can access it with the path:
\\OFFICE-SERVER\Recorded TV\

if that's all good, start serverwmc and after the client fails the live stream, give me a link to the whole server log.

The folder is being shared. How else would it be able to display all the recordings?

New logs:

It gets the recordings list through a socket connection, that's where it gets all the data it displays and how xbmc issues commands to the pvr. However, to view a live-tv or recorded-tv stream, the client has to have access to where this data is stored (the recorded tv folder)

wmc is using this path for recorded tv
D:\Recorded TV\

the network path to this folder is likely going to be:
\\OFFICE-SERVER\Recorded TV

however you have the network path set to (see folders tab in serverwmc):
\\OFFICE-SERVER\Users\Public\Recorded TV

which I believe is the same problem the OP had.

The network Path is: \\OFFICE-SERVER\Recorded TV
This is precisely how it ise setup in serverwmc. You are most likely looking at an early part of the log.
This is from the log which shows I have the correct Network Path set:

2013/11/25 18:50:13.896 OpenLiveStream> stream path returned to client: \\OFFICE-SERVER\Recorded TV\TempXBMC\LiveTV_Karen-PC_ClearQAM_2.1_2013_11_25_18_50_10.ts

I changed it upon reading this forum post. Hence why I added to this post.
The folder is shared by "Everyone" with Read/Write permissions.
People must have a user account and password
However, when I click on folder properties it does say: People must have a user account and password to access a public folder on this computer.
I assume this is the problem? I don't see how I can change this setting.

Sorry about that, you are right - I didn't keep reading.

The client is reporting that it can't open the file, but the path it is getting looks exactly right. To see it its the above problem, if you go to the start menu on the client computer and type the network path to the recorded tv folder:
\\OFFICE-SERVER\Recorded TV\

does it open?

If it doesn't open then that's definitely the problem. If so, it must be a windows setting that is wrong, have you enabled file sharing?

It doesn't open. It doesn't do anything when I try to open it from the start menu search field. I have sharing enabled on the server recording folder. It is set to "Everyone".
But as I said, the folder does say:

"People must have a user account and password to access a public folder on this computer."

Where can I enter username and password in xbmc?

Do I have to enable homegroup for this to work? I notice I can't find the network from the client pc. I can ping the server though.

I don't have homegroup enabled and it works. Have you tried:

That was it! Network sharing was a bit out of whack. I can now view the streams. Amazing that I can watch a stream perfectly well over wifi with this. Yet if I try to view the same program on an xbox extender using WMC, it goes to crap over wifi.

Question I have xbmc downloaded from xbmc website. Should I be using a custom build I have seen reference to in the serverwmc forum?

Glad you got it going. I personally don't use the custom xbmc build, but the people who do say it improves channel switching speed significantly. If you have other issues or questions about this wmc addon I suggest posting in the wmc sub forum.

You need to paste your server log into pastebin and post a link to it on this forum. Also this is kind of a funny thread because it wasn't originally about the wmc backend but it ended up going there. Start a new thread in the wmc backend sub forum (toward the top of the page) and put the link there. I am going to close this thread down.
