What about installing 13.04 with 12.2 and then upgrade to 13.10.

The long and worst way around imo, wont resolve anything (since XBMC packages for 13.04 can be installed in 13.10 with similar results) and likely cause the underlying Linux more problems than it solves, in fact, definitely not for just any Linux user unless you can fix any problems already.

Better off using the ppas or if you can deal with dependencies (hint my signature) and compile it for target specifically.

I used to use this method to upgrade xbmcbuntu, worked out fine. But with the 12.2 xbmcbuntu I can't get it upgraded to 13.04, the upgrade process breaks on upgrading lightdm.

@opperpanter: I upgraded XBMCbuntu to 13.04 many months ago without a hitch.

Why do ypu want the latest ubuntu. Imho use LTS - 12.04. don't upgrade the os until 14.04 LTS.

For Intel GPU you need kernel 3.10+ to have HD audio, for me that's the main reason.

Just upgrade xbmcbuntu (which is frodo 12.2 + ubuntun 12.10) to 13.04 and after that to 13.10.

The upgrade to 13.04 gave me the lightdm error, but seems I can ignore it.
The upgrade to 13.10 froze on depmod nvidea_304 or something like that.
After reboot I continued the upgrade and now I have frodo 12.2 on ubuntu 13.10 working fine, including HD audio!

I agree it's not the best way, but seems to be working without need to customer compile or using mainline kernels.

Yeah, especially as installing a 3.12 kernel via ubuntu mainline + upgraded firmware (4 packages in sum) is enough.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.
