I would like to share my media to xbmc clients and let the clients fetch the database from the xbmc server (NFO/Poster and so on). It works great when using a xbmc server with upnp sharing enabled. But a standalone application would be a better choice in my opinion because a very weak machine could also serve the files PLUS the NFO/Poster files that way to the clients and the clients wouldn't need an installation rather than just a live usb boot.
A "simple" python cli script with something like
upnpserver -nfo /path/to/database -files /path/to/movies
would be awesome!
