I am setting this up for a small house party but on thi HP pavillion laptop, XBMC is not starting up. I am running the nightly latest version.

oops, updated to latest nightly. still same error.

It seems that it is trying to load some remote control drivers but failing to load it.

i'm not seeing any display adaptor. are you running through some remote desktop or have you installed any latest drivers?

I am going to install ubuntu on this laptop and try again. This is a HP laptop connected to a projector. I am not sure how it is seeing a ThinkPad display.

Thanks for looking into it. I will post the results once I have machine migrated.
