He have released an experimental CM12 firmware image for their Amlogic based WeTek Play, a build based on Android 5,0 (Lollipop) which includes Tvheadend server and Kodi.
I've tried this and it works nicely, not overly keen on the kodi PQ, so switched back to openelec for tvheadend - however, I can confirm it definitely works on android.
Actually WeTek's version turned out not to be an Android port at all as it is just them running a native Linux binary under Android, so not a Android NDK port.

So that is not really that interesting, or at least it is off-topic from the point of view of this thread, which again is about a real native Android NDK port.

Running Android PVR frontend/backend on same device would welcome news. You can run TVheadend on openELEC with Kodi on the same Android box but you lose the ability to run Android apps.

@opdenkamp: Looking forward to seeing your PVR backend

Hope that it is OK with me bumping this discussion thread as I'm interested to know more current status as well as being very curious about the Tvheadend development team short-term and long-term plans for offering native Android support.

I just noticed that the http://www.tvheadend.org website now mentions that "Tvheadend is a TV streaming server and recorder for Linux, FreeBSD and Android", yet I have not read anything about that progress in the news or in any version release or changelog notes.

Does anyone care to share how the Tvheadend development team is getting along on with the work on making the Tvheadend (PVR backend) software be fully supported when running nativly on Android OS?

When if ever do you think that we will se official manufacturer firmware for Android boxes like the Nvidia Shield TV support Tvheadend (PVR backend) software?

And do you think that it will be be deliverable as an out-of-the-box release as part of the manufacturer firmware, or do you think that it will someday will be installable as an Android app from Google's Play Store?

The main point with this is as the original post suggest; to run both Tvheadned (as PVR backend) and Kodi (as PVR client and GUI frontend) on the same Android box under the original Android OS instead of having to run a Linux distro to achieve that.

Yes tested this out on the WeTek Core as well and it works but is not as quick as TvHeadend server running on my S805 AMLogic box with OpenELEC.

There is a new fronted Android helper App for TvHeadend server as well:

Agree tho, a native Android TvHeadend server App would be the preferred way to go.

Judging by these pull request patches one would think that Tvheadned mainline treee should build with the Android NDK by now?

https://github.com/tvheadend/tvheadend/pull/433
https://github.com/tvheadend/tvheadend/pull/709
https://github.com/tvheadend/tvheadend/pull/746

Guess the questions now is what is what is required and remaining for building Tvheadend as a native Android application?

All I can add is that I believe Ben Efrati (the chap behind the latest PRs) cross-compiles on Ubuntu in some way, using the Android NDK. I know no more than that, though.

I'll see if I can find him on IRC, or maybe ping him on one of those PRs to see where things stand.

Does the TVHeadend Ansroid Helper App work on other devices like nvidia shield? Has anyone tried it?
