Started Using XBMC PVR functionality with WMC
#1
I have started making extensive use of the XBMC/WMC PVR functionality with the latest nightlies. Generally very impressed.

Unfortunately.I have encountered a couple of hard XBMC crashes with using the wmc.pvr addin that require XBMC to be killed off and restarted. What would be the best way to report these problems so that they would be helpful to someone trying to track down bugs.

1. DO you need full debug turned on?
2. Do you need the symbols file installed?
etc.

Keep up the great work.
Take Care.

Are you doing something in particular when the crash happens? Like starting a recording timer or displaying epg? How do you know it is pvr.wmc that is causing the crash?

I'd say post a link to the default xbmc log after a crash for starters. If there is no info there, turn on the full debug log (I know that's a pain if the crash is intermittent).

Thanks Krusty. Don't want to blame pvr.wmc and, although I don't see many crashes with XBMC watch movies, it may be unrelated to pvr.wmc. I made a backup of the crash last night just to make sure I didn't lose it.

In both occasions, we were watching live TV and XBMC suddenly crashed. The first time was with friends over watching the Packers/49ers game. It crashed about 10sec before the 49ers kicked the field goal to will. (I am not sure I still have friends <grin>)

Last night I happened to fall asleep watching TV and when I woke up XBMC had crashed and was waiting for me to click OK. I will post the log when I get home.

Yikes! That has to be the worst horror story I've heard yet from people using my software, never mind your friends - I am surprised you are even talking to us.

Can you check in the tempxbmc directory and see if there is a directory there called savedfordebug, if there is, check inside it and see if there is a wtv stream saved there that might correspond to one of your crashes. This directory gets cleaned out every couple of days so the game won't be there but maybe a recent crash is. Also, did you save any of the server logs when xbmc crashed?

I didn't know I could crash xbmc with a live stream, but if both cases it has happening while watching live-tv, it does sound pretty suspicious. Let me know what you have. If you don't have anything, and if you still willing to use our stuff (!) next time it happens save the server log and see if there is a wtv saved in 'savedfordebug'.

I am not good at interpreting what is happening in an xbmc log, but there are errors about data packets not being there just before the log ends. That might indicate something went wrong on the swmc side of things, but again I'm very surprised it would make xbmc crash, usually the stream just ends if something goes wrong.

Here is the ServerWMC log for the time frame involved

Skin is MQ5 or Confluence. Been alternating between the 2

Where is tempxbmc located?

Its in wmc's recorded tv folder. Looking at the log though, I don't think you are going to find anything, I don't see any problems.

I will try to cause the failure by leaving LiveTV on

If you have the disk space, can you turn off 'delete temporary files'? With this option off, swmc will not delete the temp wtv/ts files it creates in the TempXBMC directory. This directory is in your recorded tv folder.

Then if it happens to you again, save the wtv you were watching when the crash occured. That's the only way I can think of to see if the stream is causing the crash. When you run with this option off, depending on how often you watch live-tv, the temporary files will start to accumulate. You can delete them by hand or restart swmc and it will clean them out when it starts. Thanks.

Thanks. Clearly xbmc is not happy about something but its weird that is just crashes. When it happens, since xbmc is just crashing, swmc will probably not notice the clent is down. So just quit swmc so it closes the streams down. But be careful to save the newest wtv/ts files elsewhere BEFORE you restart swmc, as swmc always cleans up the temp directory when it starts.

Good. I don't care if the are big, so long as you don't mind uploading them. Please put them here:

If you still have the server log from the crash put it there too. Thanks.

I uploaded the files. Deleted everything. then restarted XBMC and ServerWMC. Watching the 49'er/Panther game. When I start watching, everything seems to play back correctly. Within 15-20 minutes, the playback becomes very slow. If I hit the stop button and reselect the channel playback is again normal. The slowness reoccurs though after several minutes.
