New 5TB and 6TB coming out this year(Next month and Q2)

Wasn't sure whether to post this in Hardware or here. Since it's a big deal to most people and not just hardware people I decided it was best for here. If it belongs in hardware well just move it I guess.
Should help with people planning purchases. I almost purchased another 4TB HDD and realized I think I can wait 2 weeks for prices to drop/5TB to come into town.
Cliffs of Article:
-5TB HDDs from seagate coming next month
-6TB HDDs from HGST (Helium filled?) coming in Q2.

Quote:Seagate will follow the footsteps of Western Digital by releasing its first 3.5 inches 5TB Hard Disk Drive series in February 2014. Western Digital which promised that it is going to come up with its 5TB drives by the end of this year is busy in making its word true. News is out from reliable sources that WD will keep its word and will release its new HDD with 5TB capacity as a New Year gift.

So, Seagate technology will be the second company to launch 3.5 inches 5 platter hard drive with 5TB capacity next year. These hard drives are expected to offer 50% more capacity and will be based on the standard PMR technology.

According to Digitimes reports, HGST, a subsidiary of WD is planning to commercially release its Helium driven drives with 6TB capacity by second quarter of next year. HGST released around 800 drives to be tried and tested on various platforms a few weeks ago and Netflix openly confessed that it was using this new model in one of its storage solutions. Since, the testing yielded encouraging results, HGST has started the production in its Singapore manufacturing plant from this month, in order to make its HGST Ultrastar He6 drives available to the commercial market by next year.

Coming to Seagate’s 5TB drives, the company has already cleared the air that it has no intentions to introduce Helium based drives to the storage market in near future. Instead, the hard drive maker will stick to Shingle Magnetic Recording (SMR) and later Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technologies.

So, in coming days, it is confirmed that HGST will surely dominate the helium filled hard disk drives market for a good period of time due to less competition. So, for all those users who want to jump on HDDs with highest capacity, HGST Ultrastar He6 will be a good option to rely on, provided the price factor is not a concerning issue to them.

Excellent, that Hitachi has room for another 2 partitions per disk!!! Wink

Some light reading on where it's at in the world of storage: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/01/21/...bulations/

SMR drives seem to be the best candidate for bulk media storage but given their poorer write performance I'm beginning to think I might soon need to add a small ZIL Flash cache to my ZFS array to maintain performance... thank God for ZFS! Smile

Let's think outside the box for a second. We could be pioneers.....12 x 500GB partitions!! Big Grin

Might want to temper the desire for mass storage for some that actually hold up... ran into this a few days back and find this thread a good segway to post the link asking the question 'Who Makes the Best Hard Drives'.

Interestingly Backblaze still favour Seagate for there new drives.

5 platters imagine the failure rate/noise on those babies!! How many platters does the 6TB use?

Seems to be 1TB/platter. The susceptibility of SMR to vibration is a potential cause for concern as I'm assuming it to be fairly likely in a consumer environment.

Thanks. Now I'm extremely terrified of losing all my data and won't sleep well for the next 3 years!!!!
Lol... Serious 26% failure right? That's horrific....

I guess it's all part of their price vs replacement over time algorithm, what I'd really like to know is how long drives last on the shelf... NOT spinning. With these new gas drives, letting out the magic smoke is going to have more meaning, especially given the migration of helium thorough just about any material.

Ya my drives spend the majority of their time idle. I guess I have more motivation to move to an unRAID setup. I don't wanna pay the 350-500 it will cost me to start it up, but seems like a better alternative to waking up one day with a 4TB HDD dead.

Another view on the Backblaze thingy:

The view that vibration is killing drives might have some merit, if the other brands were not in the same situation.

Seagates warranty tells the tale.

Slashdot readers rant a lot of Seagate hate at an article that counters the Backblaze story.
